What Crankset?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What Crankset?

On my Mondonico I want to change to a carbon compact. It has a fairly modern Record aluminum crank 53/39.

Any carbon compacts that are to be avoided, like a well-known failure history? I'll probably be buying used.

The rest of the bike is Campy or American. Not against Shimano, just not for this bike.

Thanks!

Record aluminum cranks are awesome, but if you need a compact, a Campagnolo Centaur compact UT crankset in whatever material would work just as awesome.

I was reading about my FSA K-Force Light compact carbon cranks. Apparently pre-2007 FSA might be prone to some type of failure.

Hey, Celerystalksme! another Ann Arbor guy! I'm on the Old West Side, where are you?

I see number of used FSA K-force and SL-K out on Ebay, but as ain engineer I wonder what wear and tear factors could shorten the life of a carbon crank. I have a lot of confidence in Campy, but FSA is attractive due to light weight.

FSA tends to under-report K-Force weights by a considerable margin: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/li...type=cranksets

what length crank arms do you use I might have a couple of FSA (Slk) and SRAM (Red) compacts?

I currently have a stronglight vulcan with FSA rings on one bike and have previously used both FSA (briefly) and Truuativ compacts without any issues.

I'm using 172.5, but I could drop back to 170. My cadence is very comfortable with 170, but I'm getting "back up to speed" on 172.5, and the higher torque is nice. I wouldn't want to try 175's for a while.

Fellow Ann Arborite! I'm on the west side as well, close to the corner of Dexter and Wagner!

The thing about FSA...yeah, apparently they lie like dogs about their weights. I'm not trying to dump on FSA...but I'm dumping on FSA just a teeny tiny tiny bit.
