Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager inconsistent Freewheel clicking

Hello,

I have a set of Bontraget Aeolus 6.5's.

When spinning (not pedaling) the clicking sound they make is inconsistent. Hard to describe exactly, but its from loud to softer, back to loud. The wheel is TRUE....it does not wobble on the sides and does not appear to have any wobble in height when spinning. The exact same inconsistent clicking or some people call it clanking is apparent without a tire on the rim....so it seems as if its just the freehub making an inconsistent noise rather than balance or tire etc.

I have read in another forum where this may actually be somewhat common. The wheel when riding is as said above...TRUE, no wobble, skipping etc.

Any ideas or confirmation of inconsistent freehub clicking being common ?

It could be an uneven buildup of grease within the pawls, or maybe some dirt got in there.

I had a set of Race Lites with a ton of miles that did this. A good cleaning and re-grease solved it.
