Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

convince me to go RED

I'm planning a new bike and I've decided to go with SRAM. The Red looks very nice, but I have a hard time seeing the extra value vs price compared to 2009 Rival. What I see is 320g weight savings, some ceramic bearings, a very cool cassette and major bling. I'm into some bling, but $700 buys a lot of beer...or even track bike.
I welcome your thoughts on this.

You win.

Red is lighter, what else do you need?

Unless you are trying to build a lightweight bike, I recommend sticking with Rival. There are cheaper places to save the weight so unless you are already going lightweight everywhere else, save your money. You can also mix-and-match... e.g. get the Red shifters so that it looks like Red, but go Rival everywhere else.

I would go 09 rival with the red cassette. Gives you much of the weight savings right there.

[nacho libre voice] It's the best... I love it! [/nacho libre voice]

Seriously... I haven't tried any 09 stuff... but before now the Red shifting was much more responsive than Force or Rival.

+1

Why not get the Red shifters and save the extra $500 for set of lightweight wheels in the future.

I just bought a mixed red-force group on ebay for $850, which is barely more than a new rival group. I got new red cranks, new red shifters, new force brakes, new force cassette, new force BB cups, new 1070 chain, new force front derailleur, and a barely used force rear derailleur. The cheapest way to do it is buy the stuff part by part and just bide your time, watch auctions carefully and always bid in the last 30 seconds. It only took me a week of bidding, forcing myself to not get emotionally involved in bidding wars. I could have gotten the stuff even cheaper if I had been willing to wait longer and keep my bids just a bit lower. Haven't tried any of the stuff yet...its still being shipped.
