Rival 09 / Ultegra SL / Other

I have a new 09 Orbea Onix frame, I want to get a component group for it. I am thinking Ultegra Sl or Rival 09, they both are for around 700USD. What will you chose???
if other please specify

Its a personal choice. I prefer SRAM components, but like the Shimano shifters a tad bit better. Shifters you can get use to. So my choice is...........

SRAM.

I have SL. Never even considered SRAM. I don't like change!

Ultegra is faultless functionality. The SL finish looks great but is not great - it will scuff up if that concerns you.

Ultegra SL

Rival is new tech, while current gen Ultegra will be on the way out here soon. Rival is mostly as light as 7800 D/a (other than the crank). I think the choice is clear.

I have already Ultegra, the fit is ok, sram fits better. I like the finish on the SL, but I didn't know that it scuffs up.
I was telling my Lbs about wanting to get rival he said it is lower grade than 105, he recommended ultegra sl and dura ace mixed group, but i have to wait for the DA crank and shifters.

I like Ultegra SL, the hoods feel great and its tried and true. My SL didnt get scuffed at all until I crashed which of course is going to scuff your stuff up.

I am pretty sure that Rival is ultegra level and I saw the new Rival at interbike and it looks pretty awesome. NUbiker, if you were going to mix groups I would just do SL with a DA crank.

Went from Ultegra to Reds. I like how SRAM fits and how it shifts. It doesn't make me go any faster though.
edit: I would save up for better wheels. So that's my vote.

i have SL. I like it. The feel is light to the touch and it works well. I just recently got a bike with 9speed campy on it, and like the feel of the hoods a bit better. I've never actually ridden SRAM (parking lot doesn't count), and would like to see how the ergonomics play out.

SRAM

ps -- the only thing that scuffs on the SL is the crank. brakes, RD, FD, shifters look the same (unless you crash 'em)

I'm sure if nothing came into contact with the cranks then they wouldn't scuff either.

The point is the finish is a thin layer so scratches do show.

You have to ride both to really know what you like. I have 07 ultegra and 09 rival bikes. I like the ultegra operation better. For me, ultegra shifts 100%. I have some minor shifting issue every rival ride, which is mainly the FD behavior. I might like the the shape of the rival brifters more.

ps -- rival is winning because it's schwag. not expensive, but no one has it, so it's more desirable. Once it becomes common, if you ran the poll again you might get a different answer.

I keep hearing complaints about the Rival FDs... you all need to properly adjust your derailleurs! When they're not set up properly, yeah, it's tough to shift smoothly/quickly without looking down. However, when everything's as it should be--it's a faster FD shift than Shimano.

Rival is popular because it's new, lighter than Dura-Ace, and shifts very, very fast. I have the 09 variety on my Ridley Excalibur and previously used 105/Ultegra. No going back for me.

I think a lot of the people ripping on SRAM have not tried riding on them, they've only read reviews and whatnot. For me, the brifters on the SRAM fit a lot better than the Shimano that I had before and with the OG 1090 cassette shifts like butter.

I have the SL on my Onix Dama. I really like it, but have no basis of comparison. Have you tried both out?

Rival.
Shimano is in trouble if people are voting for it 2-1 over Ultegra.

I went from 105 Brifters/Ultegra to SRAM Red (minus the BB and crank). Granted, SRAM Red is not Rival but the shifting mechanism and shape of the brifters are the same. Only real thing different is Reds weigh less and have customizable shifter positions.

IMO, SRAM feels a lot better in terms of ergonomics of the hoods and I like how double tap works. Does it make me any faster? No, but the question the OP posed deals more with money than anything else. If he is going to blow $700 anyway, I would go for Rival 09, since he said he already has nice wheels

Dunno if anyone has said it but you can probably pick up DA7800 cheaper than Ultegra SL these days.

The oft repeated conclusion on bike forums that Rival may be as good as Dura Ace because the weight is close is misguided imo. When Rival has established a track record of years and years of consistent, dependable performance like Dura Ace has, then report back to us.

"Light, Cheap and Durable---pick two."

You know I thought of this option first, but couldn't find any DA groupo fore less then 1K. I thought getting the current DA and then in the future upgrade the brifters and crank.

As for the campy supporter, where can I find a chorus group for around 700USD?

I haven't ridden sram for long distance, just in the parking lot of the LBS. I couldn't feel a very big difference in shifts with what I have the Ultegras, of course the mechanism is different.
That's why I am asking the forum, because I can have a clearer idea. Most of the sram riders were shimano riders, and if you read the details they will not go back to shimano. That's what I am getting...
