Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need info on replacing PowerTap SL bearings

I recently purchased a used PTap SL. In my hands, they feel like they're rolling pretty gritty, especially compared to my Easton EA90's (the R4 hub), which feel smooth as silk. Getting some nice bearings from Phil Wood or wherever would cost <$50 and my mechanic would do it for a tip. I asked him today and he says he can do them.

However, Saris is saying that replacing bearings absolutely requires a recalibration. They're replacement/recalibration service costs $85, I wouldn't get a chance to put better bearings in there, and I'd lose my wheel for the better part of 2 weeks. I don't like the sound of that. The other side is that if recalibration gets screwed up, they'd charge me a $200 overhaul.

Is Saris just being conservative? Has anyone here carefully (i.e., no hammers) replaced their PTap SL cartridge bearings or had a skilled mechanic do it, without need for calibration?

I'm no mechanic, but I believe there are bearing puller and press tools to do this more delicately than a hammer.
