Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Financially Beneficial Rides

Today my father and I went for a ride ... which in itself is beneficial ... but along the way I picked up $1.30 in change, and he picked up 25 cents.

It's not the first time ... I've picked up several dollars along the way, and so has my father. Intersections are particularly good for locating change.

How about you? What kind of windfalls have you found while riding?

Two sunglasses, both of them scratched to hell.

Though I did pick up a $50 bill during a debate tournament once. Spent it on overpriced RAM.

A damaged gold ring, 17 bucks rolled up that included a discontinued 2 dollar bill. I earned $100 in race winnings last year too.

The most interesting thing I've found was while walking, 103,000 Italian lira... turned out to be worth around $80.

You can't post "race winnings" unless you itemize and deduct entry fees and travel costs.

Me, I've ammassed an awesome collection of ball caps and hand tools. My favorite is the brand-spanking new black hat with gold NRA on the front. Oh also, one of those flourescent safety vests that road workers wear.

I met my ex wife on a ride refilling my water bottle at the store she owned. After the divorce the only thing I had left was my bike and around $90000 in debt... IMHO I should have been looking for change like you in the first place and not a great pair of legs

No, that's how it works for taxes. For bragging rights, you list them irregardless of incurred costs and even add the MSRP for all primes before declaring it.

Several months back, I was on a ride with another BF member (t4mv from California) and I found a $1 and $5 bill folded up on the road. But this was small compared to 2 other recent finds - found a $20 bill on the side of the road as I running near my mom's house and I found a $100 on the sidewalk as I was walking my daughter to school.

last week i found a wallet in the road. it was obstructing traffic so i turned back to pick it up. it had $305 dollars in it. i found it next to a bank and turned it into them. i didn't have time to call the guy up or stop by his house. i shoulda taken one of the creit cards and bought a bike, the lbs was .5miles away, but i resisted temptation.

last year i found 7 dollars, in cash money, near a gas station.

i found a couple of quarter super glued to the intersection.

i see alot of pennies, dimes and quarters, but i almost never pick them up. i never use change and it would just sit in a draw at home not making any money. if only atms took lose change i might beable to afford zipp 404s

I've found a lot of friends. They're priceless. Everything else is kind of silly.

Lots of tools, weed and interestingly enough, a small plastic banana.. But the most important thing I found was the reason to never smoke another friggin' cigarette...

I found a nice 12mm box end wrench on the road, which I left there and picked up on my way back. Last week on a century I probably spotted 15 cents in change. I'd definitely stop for any paper currency. And there's probably a couple of bucks worth of cans laying along the road (5 cent refund) on any given ride.

I'd like to make friends, but I rarely see any serious roadies in my travels--despite perfect conditions.

I found a wallet on Saturday morning's ride. Way out in the country on the roadside. No idea how it got there. $28, driver's license, etc. I'm still trying to get a hold of the owner.
