Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

umm, you weigh the part or take spec weight and add it up? Why wouldn't you create your own spreadsheet?

I'm no scientist, but I believe you need a scale to determine weights.

And maybe a calculator to calculate them.

Now I'm confused. How many tires are there?

I'll never be good at this.

Someone should make a spreadsheet with drop down selections so we can play around with different component weights (and $$$) and configurations. Not it.

If anyone has a decently current database of component weights, I'll put the spreadsheet together.

WOW! Why does no one get this? Instead of building one and taking the time to list every freakin piece on my bike... I though if anyone had a nice one already made I would just download it. This practice is not uncommon. I know how to do it... that is not the issue here. And why is it that on this forum if someone enjoys building up bike piece by piece and taking an interest in its aesthetic attributes he must not ride it? I guess I’m the only gearhead that rides the machines he builds up.

Good luck with that. With each component, there are at least 3 weights. a) what the manufacturer claims it weighs, b) what yours weighs, and c) what mine weighs. Weight weenies is probably the closest you will get to a database of weights. An alternative is to go to Competitive Cyclist and build a bike with their online tool. It lets you pick components and shows you the weights.

1. For each part that you want, enter the weight into a spreadsheet
2. Add up

Why are you trying to make it so complicated?

Yeah, I was thinking claimed weight. Won't be perfect.

Weight weenies has a big parts list with claimed and actual weights listed.

Not a spreadsheet though.

Claimed weights are the least reliable of the three options umd provided.

The differences between the claimed weights and the actuals weights add up. It's much easier to build a sub 15 pound bike with claimed weights than actual weights.

I'm serious, go to CompetitiveCyclist.com and play with their build configuration tool.

Edit: I configured a 5300g (11.7 lbs) R3-SL for only $13,000

Editx2: Of course that's claimed weight, and more importantly, pretend money
