Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The way I see it, why risk an entire frame when you can just risk a cheap seat post? If you mess up the seat tube, game over. If you mess up the seat post, put a new one in.
This is why it's always a good idea to cover the repair stand clamp with a shop rag. To minimize any kind of paint damage.

It's easy to be crass, or tease until it's YOUR nice bike that was scratched up by some jack@ss who should have known better.

I would speak with the owner, or manager about the situation. My race bikes are covered in scratcher that I put there, not some nimrod. There is a BIG difference, especially when you're paying a "professional" to do quality work.

Guy comes in, needs quick service, doesn't have enough seat post to accomodate clamp, I'm using seat tube BUT my clamp isn't failing. Yes, rag is a good idea too. Your LBS needs to replace their clamp with one that's rubber coated or has a rubber insert on the clamping surface....It is the 90s after all...
