Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Top 5 Pros of All Time

Here are mine:

Eddy Merckx - Best
Lance Armstrong - 7
Fausto Coppi - From what I've seen, amazing
George Hincapie - Seems like a cool dude, easy to route for
Erik Zabel - Loved the way he sprinted. Plus, Hell on Wheels made him seem down to earth.

I know a ton are left out, who are your favorites?

Hinault was a complete friggin ahole. A fast ahole, but an ahole all the same.

Nothing wrong with that.

Hincapie and I were Juniors at one time. Then I became Senior Men Cat 3 and he was still a Jr at that year. As a 3, there were only Pro/1/2/3 races, never solo Cat 3 races. He would still kick our *****es. He was way better than Mike McCarthy at the same time. He was a super nice guy back then as well.
My other 4 riders:
Merkx
Kelly
Lemond
Heiden

Merckx seems to be about the only almost unanimous choice.

I'm young, I need to read up on all the cycling history and see why these guys were so great.

Hincapie is the man! Not only one of the hardest working & unselfish riders in the pack. But he also is a great person & does a lot to support cycling in our community (Greenville, SC - where he lives now) and is always riding in the community. Very down to earth & extremely friendly. Although I don't think I am saying anything that nobody on here doesn't already know.

Other than Lance & Merckx, I don't know if I know enough Pros of ALL-TIME. I use to think Lemond was something, but now he kind of seems like the spoiled brat at the park who leaves with his basketball when his team loses.

Current:
1. Jens Voigt (hardest working)
2. Dave Z (Funniest)
3. Lance Armstrong: Most attention to detail
4. Scleck Bros' (fun to watch)
5. George Hincapie (hottest wife)

Retired/Dead
1.Vladimir Ekimov (hardest working)
2. Marco Pantani (funt to watch) (funny looking)
3. Eddy Merckx, (He's the Cannibal)
4. Seán Kelly (hard man)
5. Davis Phinney

Other Greats: Bernard Hinault, Fausto Coppi, Miguel Indurain, Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Olmo etc. etc. So many great riders... I will also add Greg Lemond (beacuse of what he did for American cycling 20 years ago, not what he is doing now.. I've lost current respect for him)

No one mentioned Tommy D?

+1 on these two. I've met both (and frequented Jeff's bike shop in Davenport for a while).
