Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nothing today ..... apparently the winds were clocked as high as 100 km/h throughout central Alberta.

We had a cloudy morning but no rain. I was out of the house by 7:30 (late starts now because of the long nights) on my new bike. I was determined to get some serious miles in, because I've only been able to free up 30-40 minutes each day the previous week.

I did about 50 miles solo, averaged 17.4 mph. I altered my usual longish route to take in a couple more long hills so I could judge climbing ability of the bike (and me). I had a blast.

40 miles partially on some virgin (for me) roads, not many cars because the GA-LSU game was on tv, temp in the mid 60's (almost perfect), wind 14 with gusts to 25mph (just a sneeze for Machka but not for me). Speaking of wind, why is it I seem to never get a tailwind, just a headwind or crosswind?

45 miles in the wind. It changed from 40 degrees yesterday to about 62 today. The ride was cut short when I broke a spoke and had to wobble home. Luckily that was only about a mile away.

Sat 25-10-2008 (London, England)

37 kilometers, 235 meters ele gain (22 miles, 700 feet ele gain)

A windy autumnal day here in London - mild - leaves falling everywhere.

Cycled from my home in North West London to Regents Part in the centre. Took a 'scenic'
route passing through suburban neighbourhoods I have never visited/or passed through
London.

Made me realised just how pretty and diverse London can be away from the main
throughfares.

21.7 miles. 72 degrees, light wind. The sun was going down and it was a peaceful and beautiful ride. Stupid orange Nissan/Toyota mini pick up threw a 2 liter bottle of soda (partially full) at me and missed . I tried not to show a reaction, but made note of their vehicle and occupants. Still, a nice ride on a perfect day. It's good to be back.

I don't mind riding in the rain if I get caught in it, but I won't choose to start in it.
Weird to have a Saturday with no ride.
Beth

Maybe it's just me but I actually don't mind riding in a little rain provided it's warm enough. You just have to HTFU.

Yesterday started out just a light drizzle in the mid-60s. The wind was pretty strong at times and shifted right at my turnaround so it was pretty much a 15-20mph head wind all day . The way home was less exciting as the temp dropped to about 60F and the rains came in heavy and hard. Made it a little cold at times so I just had to lay out a little more power to keep warm. Still, weather aside I got in 42 miles and felt pretty good about that.

Looking forward to bright and sunny mid to upper 60s this afternoon!

I did a ride supported by the L.A. Wheelmen. 50 riders, 86 miles with over 7000 feet of gain. Below freezing at the start, and 80f later in the ride. I had the flu last week and was a dumbass to do this ride, but the day was beautiful, the food and support great, and friends were there.

35 miles with 3500 ft of climbing. Haven't been on the bike for a while so the pace was moderate - the ride reminded me how cycling is awesome. Great weather and fresh air...very refreshing.

I actually tackled the local mountain for the first time! It was a 19 miles ride and I loved it. I did have to stop twice going up the mountain though because I was relatively sure i was going to vomit...

So... Did you vomit?

I did 35 miles on the slow bike today. Maybe I'm not climbing steep enough hills, but I swear the triple makes climbing harder than the standard double on my Cervelo.

I rode on Saturday.

On Friday I took the bottom bracket out of one of my bikes because it was clicking pretty bad. A washer/seal was out of position on the non-drive side and I thought that it was "toast" (ISIS FSA Platinum Ti, btw). I ended up "punching" it back into place with a screwdriver/hammer/vice combo and re-installed it.

I took it out for a 28 mile test ride and all is good.
