Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A short conversation I had with a hipster

I'm passing by some hipster on a fixie (what a surprise!) while climbing the hill in Central Park the other day, and I turn to her (because she was a cute hipster) and say "you have a very high gear on that thing" as I watch her struggle up the hill. Her reply, "It's a fixed gear bike" like I've never seen one before and needed an explanation. I shifted a few gears higher, stood on the pedals, and took off just shaking my head.

Why do these people all think they've invented something new? GMAFB.

You had an opportunity to school her thus tapping into the Daddy complex. Go back and find her.

I used to ride FG a lot to train to spin. Then I stopped because I didn't want people to think I was better than them.

'Cuz most people don't think that anyone would ride a fixed gear, so she's playing the odds by telling you about it.

If she sounded rude, it's because she's annoyed at herself for putting up with it.

I am fairly certain that there is an equal and opposite thread posted in SSFG. Don't you know that fixies smoke roadies 9 times out of 10?

I spend about equal amounts of time in the SS/FG and RC forums. Most of the threads in both forums are self-focused, but there's always a bit of mutually-directed insecurity. However, the FG crowd have youth as an excuse. Since the average age in this forum is probably about ten years higher, you roadies have less of an excuse for these threads.

Some answers to the above questions:

Yes, there are hills in NYC. Central Park has a few. Are they 5000' of climbing over 2 miles type of hills? NO. Just a a short hill up at the north end. If you're strong you can just stomp over it.

No, we were not the same age. I'm over 50 and married. But she was definitely cute. If it were a guy on a fixie doing the same thing I wouldn't have even noticed.

I have no problem with fixies, even if I don't ride one. They are riding after all. It's just that at 50 years old I don't need some 20yo telling me about this "new" thing that they all think they invented. I first rode one when I was 20 myself.

As for blowing off a cute girl, at over 50 I've seen plenty in my life. For that matter I was in Central Park and there were enough in there that day. If she were cute and friendly that would be another matter.

You should have shifted to a lower gear and showed her how a real man does it.

Of course, this is assuming you're a real man.

I race there each March, and be assured, 'stomp over it' is precisely what those animals tend to do. I'd guess the lightest gear is a 53 x 19 when they're hammering. Couldn't tell you, all I know is I'm in the big ring, I don't have time to make a note of the exact gear.
