Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Univega or Raleigh? (I know they're related..)

Just to let you know, I'm new to this forum and hope to be well involved with it in the future!
I am also new to this whole biking thing so feel free to give me tips and advice!

I'm currently in the market to buy a road bike to commute to and from campus and I've been looking on craigslist for a while now. I came across an old Univega Nuovo Sport ($155) and an old Raleigh ($100..doesn't say what model). My budget is VERY tight, as you may have suspected....so which would you recommend?

I got that Univega. I trash picked it and put dura ace 8 speed on it with new wheels and use it for cross. When I first got it, I put a new chain on and new tires and it was my first road bike. I would go with that for sure.

they're both very similar in size..
Don't Raleigh's have a nicer riding experience and a better reputation?

FWIW, someone gave me a '96 Univega Superstrada and it is my 2nd favorite frame I've ever owned. Feels light and responsive, yet pretty darn plush.

Best to last:
08 Moots Vamoots
'96 Univega Superstrada
'03 Litespeed Solano
'01 Bianchi Volpe
'00 Lemond Tourmalet
Various misc others

Best to ask Kurt in the Classic forum on these older bikes. He could tell you the age and attributes of the Raleigh.
I also like the Univega of which I have an 1986 Maxima Sport 6speed.
Best riding bike I own but I,ve succumb to riding the 2 newer modern bikes more often.
