Biking in the rain?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Biking in the rain?

I'm currently moving to somewhere where it rains most of the time. I was wondering if riding in was bad for or can damage your bike.

you & the bike will be fine; just be sure to wipe it down after riding in the rain, and also lube the chain so it doesn't rust.

and full fenders will do you a world of good in the rain.

I hope not. I've been riding in such an area for years and put tens of thousands of miles on in the rain. I'd hate to think I was screwing something up all that time...

BTW, rain will cause stuff to wear out faster, but would you really stop riding just because the parts don't last quite as long?

I would be more worried about your body and less worried about your bike. I live in Eugene, where it rains from October to May and I crash all the time. I commute by bike and ride a road bike on weekends so I put a lot of miles in but I crash every couple of months.

I lived for 15 years in the Puget Sound area, moved away for 20, then moved back last year. I'm still not used to the rain again. But I know I will be. Adapt or die, right?

Yeah, you caught me. That was on my clipboard after uploading it to Photobucket. Didn't mean to paste it. I edited it as soon as I saw it, but you're too quick.

The craptastic part is that it's WARM rain. Cold rain would at least be snow in the mountains.

It depends on how often you ride in the rain. For a lot of parts in the drivetrain, rain accelerates wear. However, I assume that you won't be riding in rain ALL of the time, so if you take care of your bike a little more, you should be okay.

It's obviously pretty easy to avoid rain riding here in San Diego, but I personally don't mind rain too much except that I try and grab my hybrid, instead of my road bike.

I rode in the rain today and I liked it. First of all, I was well dressed for it and I liked the Man vs. the Elements feel to it.

It certainly beats the trainer.

Unless you are a candyass. Then your behind will melt. Don't forget that sugar is water soluble...

I wish my behind would melt in the rain, then maybe I wouldn't be to fat for this sport...

The problem is that your shorts would stick to your body, and you wouldn't be able to remove them. Coincidence, I think not....
