Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Klein Quantum Race

This is my wife's bike and is 9 years old and has 80,000+ plus miles. She rides daily. The question is, should she "upgrade" this frame with new components (10 speed), etc. or buy a new bike. We would like to get input from folks that have had and/or still have this frame as to the loooong term problems.

Thanks
Les

If there haven't been problems with the bike altogether, then there isn't really a need to upgrade anything. The Klein's were really sturdy bikes and very well made, and unless she's putting out massive amounts of power all day then there is ntohing to worry about.

There aren't any real problems, the right shifter rattles, it's very annoying, but it works just fine, never misses a shift.

I've got the same bike from 98, but mine might not have as many miles. I'm still riding it with the same 9 speed I have had since 98. I recently replaced the cranks after seeing the pics of broken cranks, and before that I replaced most of the other parts, but the frame itself is still going strong.

I have a Quantum from 96, though mine has quite a bit less miles. I'm quite happy with the frame; in fact, I'm in the midst of upgrading from an 8-speed 105/600 mix to 10-speed Ultegra - I was due for a new cassette and chain anyway, and the cage of my front derailleur was bent, so why not throw in some shifters and a new RD too?

If everything is functional, though, just keep riding it.
