Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's your longest impulse ride?

Yesterday I didn't really have anything to do after school, so I jumped on the bike at 1 pm with only a tigers milk bar, four graham crackers (i love them) and a baggie of Gatorade powder. Wanted to ride to the beach and back (about 50 miles round trip) but once I got to the coast my legs were feeling really good so I just kept riding Pacific Coast Highway for another 25 miles or so. Then I turned around and went home. last 8 miles were in the dark. oh well. It was about 102 miles total. An impulse century!

So how many miles have you gone without planning on it?

Schweet.

I've done a few rides where I did unplanned miles... usually b/c a road on the map wasn't there in reality. Empty legs, darkening skies and cooling temps result.

These days I'm so wrapped up in grown-up life, a 3 hour ride is simply not allowed to become a 3:15 ride.

Impulse ... at least 160 kms (100 miles). I've done several "accidental centuries" where I've headed out on a beautiful day ... and just kept riding ... and rode 100 miles.

I've done a couple 200 km rides in a similiar manner (where I was heading to a particular location with the goal of visiting that location rather than just covering distance) but I had a rough idea of the distance, and had planned to do the ride the day before.

I've never really planned a distance. Did 21 miles last Saturday (or the one before?). Was fun.

I don't usually plan a distance either. I usually get a late start and have to head back so I'm not too far from home once it gets dark (speaking of which, I hate that Daylight Savings Time is about to begin).

I plane every damn thing I do down to the last detail. Its been a long time ago but the farthest I have ever ridden without really knowing what I was doing was 74 miles, which was the farthest I had ever ridden at that point.

I would have bonked for sure. An impulse ride has to be under 60 miles for me or I'll run out of gas, unless I'm able to stop into a convenience store and buy some carb replacement. I guess you had enough food to keep going, but I think the amount you were carrying would have lasted me about 70.

My longest "just keep riding" ride was probably 50. Planned rides have been up to 80 so far. Now that my wife is literally days away from childbirth, the long rides will have to wait; I can't afford to be two hours from home when the call comes.

I've done over 100 several times and probably will do that again. I think max is around 130 (done many years ago). However, I eat considerably more than the OP on these rides.

It's a burden to live that way, though there's something to be said for being meticulous.

I think it was 45 miles. Rode down one street in my neighborhood to see how far it went.

Or a really big neighborhood.

When I was about 15 a friend and I rode about a century when we had planned to only ride about 50 miles. I got home a little later than my parents expected me. They weren't happy about that.

The street that my house backs up to is about 30 miles long, if you consider the handful of times it changes names.

I once rode 25 miles on my MTB with slicks to a trailhead, with knobbies over my shoulder. I swapped tires, threw the slicks into some shrubs, and hit the Colorado Trail for 35 miles with six major climbs (Waterton back to the Platte), much of it gnarly moto-x trail. Then I got back to the trailhead, swapped tires, and rode 25 miles home. 10 hours solo.

109. It wasn't planned as in I wanted to really go out and put those miles under me. I needed to get to Santee, SC, but me car had broke down.

Now, a friend of mine did something completely off the chain. He told his went out for a long ride. Three days later he calls me from Summerville, SC, with two broken spokes on a Sunday. He had logged 267 miles just riding out in the country.
