Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New and need a little advice

Ok, I went to my lbs this past weekend... twice lol. I'm looking at a Trek 1.2 or a Treck 1600 Demo model. They want 900 for the 1600 and 800 for the 1.2. Here is my question, the 1600 has the (bike shop said) better shifters [ones you click with the brake] and the 1.2 has the ones you click down with your thumb. Is this true? If I've not put enough info in this thread please let me know and I'll do my best to add what is needed. This will be my first Road Bike, I liked the shop but since I don't know much about road bikes I wanted to get the internets second opinion.

Thanks abunch.

You will love the shifters with the brakes.

I think it's a 105 v. Tiagra or Sora question.

To answer the OP, I'd go for the one where you shift with the brake lever.

The Trek 1.2 has Shimano Sora STI shifters, 9 speed and the Trek 1600 has Shimano 105 STI, 10 speed

Without knowing any other thing, I'd pay an extra $100 for 105.

If this is a Sora v. Tiagra situation, you may find that the thumb lever on the Sora shifters becomes annoying to use after a while, as it makes shifting in the drops difficult at best. The first hardware work on my bike I did was to swap out Sora shifters for Tiagra ones. Go for the brake lever ones.

Agreed. 105 is a major upgrade from Sora, and would be worth every penny in that case.

I haven't had issues shifting with the Sora STI system, even in the drops.

In fact, I like it better than the lever shifting system I used when I tried out some newer bikes.

Yup...your lbs wasn't misleading you. 1600, no question.

That is, as long as it fits you.

The 1.2 doesn't have Sora shifters, it has 2200 which are a step down from them. Mega flimsy plastic turd. You also wont be able to shift from the drops with the Shimano shifters that use the thumb button, which does not apply to Campagnolo's thumb button. The 1600 is a far better bike for only $100 more.

I plan on taking a longer test ride this weekend and purchasing one of them. I'm excited.
