Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SmartLock exploding bicycle lock

This appears to be a design prototype, not a real product:

I like the idea. Too bad it's not an actual grenade.

However, I suspect that once identified, a SmartThief (tm) would wrap the lock in a towel and cut slowly to release pressure gadually.

I think a better idea would be to simply start executing thieves caught in the act.

I was hoping it blew up and took a few fingers with it.

Screw fingers. I want it to shoot a projectile at the thief's crotch. Nothing will deter thieves like a threat to their junk.

But pain goes away. If we take off their fingers they'll have to explain to people why they lost fingers. Or entire hands would be fine too.

No thanks!

A bike that has been stolen will be covered in coloured dye (the dye renders the bike undesirable and therefore unsellable ) as well as transluscent Smartwater - an invisible forensic property marking liquid.

Not if it explodes after impact.

I'd never lock up my road bike. Working at a police station, I know that no locks are safe.

The main purpose of a lock is to make your bike less attractive to a thief than the bike next to it. You may not need a lock, however, if you always park your bike in a police station.

just like the theft deterrents the clothing sections in stores use.

I got some of that stuff on my hands once, didn't come off for a week. (the costco clerk forgot to take the thing off and I broke it when I got home)

Except the OnGuard locks that you have to HEAR being hacked before your bike gets stolen.

Plus, locks are usually deterrents to keep people away. The stronger and tougher looking the lock, the lower the risk of it getting stolen.

I just want razor blades to shoot out of my saddle after the lock has been cut.

In theory, yes. But the kids that steal bikes break locks so fast you wouldn't believe it. They have all kinds of methods for breaking U locks, and it only takes a few seconds. I wouldn't trust any lock with my bike, because it'd be gone as soon as I turned my back. (around here anyway - in my hometown it wouldn't be much of a concern)

What is the best lock? Besides tying a German Shepard to your bike there as to be an option.

130 db proximity alarm (does not even need to be touched) that has proven it can put holes right through a finger. Marking the perpetrator with blood and some missing flesh. Go ahead, make my day!

This one looks pretty tough:
https://commutebybike.com/2008/11/06/...om-kryptonite/

It weighs as much as some complete bikes, so this is something you will probably leave at your home or work parking spot rather than carrying around with you.

Jeez! That would make an excellent weapon too. Get a 5 foot long, 16 lb piece of chain whipping around and you could do some serious damage to clueless motorist's cars. Or kill them if you wanted.

I should buy that for training purposes, wear it around my waist. (I know adding weight to the bike isn't helpful, let's not start that again)

If I saw someone stupid enough to have one of these I would stand far away and cut the cable just so dye would go all over their bike.
