Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thermometers

It would be nice if my Sigma bike computer had a thermometer in it, along with all the other data. I figured that Garmin would include one in its cycling GPS units, but again, no dice.

What do other riders do to monitor the temp on their rides? Or am I the only one who thinks that would be yet another interesting ride detail?

Try a rectal thermometer mounted to the bottom of your seat.

thermometer alone doesn't account for wind chill or humidex/heat index

works for me.

one thing that would be nice would be a site/tool that you say "i'm going here, here and here today," and the site would tell you what the conditions will be like in each of those areas, at the time you expect to be there. unless that already exists, i plan to write it eventually.

I use have one in my bar bag. Get one from an auto parts store for A/C temps for about $6.00.
I find it very important to know the air temp. Tells me me how to dress amd drink.
The round white thing on the right side .

what's the metal pole piece with the red disc on the end?

and not to nit-pick, but wouldn't that thermometer show the temp inside your bag?

Camera Mount:

Yes it will. The Roads get up to 140* in the Hot Sun. Also the Sun can heat up the thermometer.
The bag is not insulated.

I took that to be an insult. Why a rectal thermometer? Why on the bottom of the seat?

My apologies. Sometimes it's hard to tell the routine BF flaming from the legitimate, helpful responses.

I use a Highgear altimeter watch that has a thermometer. The reading is only good in the shade.

That Sigma BC2006 looks like it does most of what a GPS will do (plus the temp readout) for less than $100. Beats dragging my old Garmin 60CS around in the seat bag just to get my vertical gain. I don't see a wire for the HRM, but it must have one.

NOAA has very detailed information.

This - click on the map area to locate the exact spot you are interested in, and then you can click on the Hourly Weather Graph link and get this.

The HRM is wireless. It uses radio frequency to send your heart rate data from the chest strap to the computer.

I get interferance when riding under high power lines. The first time it happend, I was cresting a steep climb with HR at ~180 and then suddenly it read 0. I though I just had a coronary.

My VDO computer has temp, but it's not a necessity. It's just fun to look at it to comfirm why I'm suffering out there. Aside from that, it doesn't tell me anything I can't tell from my body.

Took me 11 months and 10,000 miles to get it all figured out.
Going for 20,000 miles next year
Guess I could use a yellow five gallon bucket like this one:
