What Do You Think About When You Ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Perfecting my snot rocket. My nose will not stop running when I ride, so I'm constantly thinking about when to sniff, when to blow, when to wipe. It gets really annoying, because I'm real particular about my breathing when riding or running (most people count cadence of whatever their legs are doing, I count my breaths).

Right side: about 90% success
Left side: about 60% success, the other 40% ending up on my shoulder or all over the left side of my face/head, it sucks

Not a lot, usually. I just pedal along. If I set off with my head buzzing with thoughts, they've usually gone after a few miles.

I still haven't perfected it. Your percentages are higher than mine. Mine usually end up on my shoulder, it's a lot harder than it looks.

I wrote a screenplay once.

It was great.

I wish I could remember it.

Best answer!

I like cycling because it's one of the only times where I'm totally in the moment. I'm thinking about what I'm doing - nothing more. I'm not worried about anything other than right and left hooks, gravel, potholes, and attack vultures. I'm not obsessing about anything except what power zone I'm in. It's a rare day that other stuff creeps into my thoughts.

HaHa!! I've never had that problem. A friend of mine mentioned that he misses alot too and I thought, "are you serious?" I can't say I miss. The key is not to blow snot with the wind coming at you! HeHe!!

the first 10-15 minutes i am just warming up and trying to get my cadence above 90+, then i am in a zone that while paying attention to the road/traffic ahead and behind i can observe the life around me, clouds, birds, trees, lake, etc.. getting in touch with my body as i bike is a feeling i had lost for about 8-10 years in the hiatus between daily running and daily biking. at the end as the endorphins kick in and i'm heading to the shower i am always amazed how great i feel at 60 years old. i spend a far portion of the rest of the day thinking about the next days ride.

One thing I recently figured out, when you turn your head to the side, don't tilt it into the wind (like making your head horizontal to the ground). Keep your head upright, and the wind pulls it out and away from your nose. Tilted into the wind, I guess the aerodynamics of your head cause the wind to pull the snocket back to your mouth/chin/shoulder.

We really should make a new thread about this, discuss it in detail. Anyone got a wind tunnel we could borrow?

Tell it. Tell it, brother.

A buddy of mine went so far to say his bike is his psychiatrist, and sometimes I know exactly what he means.

I think about what it must be like to be a bird and have the ability to fly. Because when I'm ridin' its the closest I'm getting to self propelled flight.

Someone at work suggested that all my riding this summer gave me lots of time for "thinking". I wonder what SHE was thinking. Anyway I told there was too much to think about while commuting in traffic to "THINK" about anything but biking. She has no clue.

As sad as it sounds, sometimes I think about smoking a cigarette ( in the process of switching addictions). Other times I think about if riding is going to cause serious damage to my junk. Sometimes I think, where the **** am I and will I be able to make it back to work on time. Most of the time I think of nothing, the reason I started riding.

Why don't I do this more often?
Maybe I can get in shape enough to race?
Then at the end of the ride: I rode too hard.

This. For for me it's usually R.E.M. or Stereolab or some such. It changes about once an hour.

I often ride behind my wife who looks real good in her tights, so what I think about probably isn't suitable for posting here.
