Cycling in Japan, Okinawa
I am heading to Okinawa in February, for 2 years. Taking both my road and mountain bike. Anyone ever live over there, any riding experiences to share?

I was stationed over there for 8 months when I was in the military back in 2000. I was new to cycling and just did alot of road riding on a cheapo mountain bike that I got from the base store.
Okinawa is a fairly small island. Someplaces only 3 miles wide from coast to coast. There are some challenging rollers if I recall correctly. The weather is humid all year round and lots of rain. There is a lot of congestion from traffic in the southern part of the island, but the Okinawan people are very courteous and polite, so you shouldn't have any problems with them.
For moutain biking, I would hit up the northern part of the island. There are probably some decent trails because it is less developed. They also have a nice beach/resort on the northern part of the island. We did all of our jungle training up north also.
Good luck and have fun!

BOT, cycling wasn't all that big back then, so all we ever did there was scuba, run, drink, and run some more. oh yeah, and spend some time out at sea, such was the life of an amphib warrior.

Share the road.
I am stationed here right now. I love the cycling here. I am currently putting a Crosscheck together for cyclocross and commuting. There aren't too many bike shops on the island and getting parts you want occurs mostly online. I ride every day of the year to work.
