Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dumb Idea??: PocketPC bike comp

So I have no idea of the feasibility of this but I was using the GPS2Powertrack feature of SportTracks (if you havent come across this yet, you dont know what you are missing) and it suddenly dawned on me that this actually would be good for training if there was a real-time readout of "calculated" power.

Now Im not suggesting that this would be a replacement for a real SRM or power tap BUT....

Could you imagine what you might achieve if you had a calculated Power figure on your bike computer using the algorithm from analytic cycling.

https://www.analyticcycling.com/ForcesPower_Page.html

So knowing this I did a little hunt around and came across a little program for a PocketPC called GPSDash

https://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.ppc2.php

It doesnt really do what I want but I was wondering whether anyone has encountered a bike computer based on PPC yet? Something that does GPS(need altitude) Cadence and Speed.

Best thing would be to open source my Garmin 705 software and allow someone to write the algorithm into the 705 feature set.

Viable or is it in the too hard basket and Im ahead of my time?

Overall, if your objective before your ride was to keep a certain wattage (even if it is just theoretical) and you could see a readout that had the calculated number there, wouldnt u just ride harder to maintain it?

i like the idea, although i'm not a fan of power data.

does the 705 have a wireless/bluetooth option? that would be an easy way to link the PPC and the garmin device, perhaps.

It would never work, you need real time weather/wind data. If you add a sensor for that, then you have... and iBike.

Also, I should add that I've used GPS2Power and now that I have a power meter I can say that the results are OK for an average over the entire ride but are pretty bad the shorter the duration. Anything less than about 5 minutes, or for a pure climb, were pretty meaningless.
