Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Black caliper options.

I need some calipers for a new build I'm going to be working on soon. I am going with 09 Rival and figure that silver brakes I have laying around might look strange. So in the spirit of OCP, I am going with black brakes. Anything better than the regular old Rival with Kool Stop pads?

I know Cane Creek has some. I have some Records, but need them to be SRAM compatible(i.e. with a quick release).

Tektro makes some black brakes. I have the RX-40. They're cheapish, pretty light, and brake really well with Kool Stop pads. They're Shimano style, is that the same as SRAM?

The 09 black Rivals rock!! I switched to them after having Dura Ace 7700 series brakes and the difference is amazing. Really, stick with the black SRAM Rivals.

Are you questioning why the Rival?

It's on a race bike and I never put the top of the line stuff on race bikes. Easier to replace when it's relatively cheap.

No, I think he was suggesting it. The '09 Rival brake calipers are black:

Shimano 105 - the 5500 version came in black and can occasionally be found new on Ebay for cheap.

Yeah. And rival is hardly top of the line.

I get that.

What I'm asking is; is there anything better than the Rival brakes that can be found in black?
I use Record and Dura Ace brakes right now. My TT bike has some Tektros that are terrible.

With the new updates to Rival for 09, there is hardly a reason to shell out any money for Force IMO. I'm not paying for the bike(except components), so I am trying put a good performing race rig together for a reasonable price.

That's my dilemma. I am piecing together an 09 Rival group(don't need cranks) off ebay. I didn't know if I should stick to the group brakes, or if there were some other mfr brakes(such as the Mavics or Cane Creeks that I didn't think about) that might be better. I've never used the Rival brakes and wasn't sure if they were any good.

I just replaced a set of Ultegra brakes with Black 09 Rivals. They are noticeably better. Both have stock pads.

You don't need 'em. I've ridden Mavic SSC brakes with D/A for almost 4 years and never had an issue. The power is so powerful, linear and progressive that you can run them a bit looser than other brakes and still have more than enough stopping power.

There's your answer, it's a crit bike. You don't need brakes in a crit.

I'll throw out another vote for the Tektro RX-40 brakes. I have em and they haven't been a disappointment at all to me.
