Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Fruits of My Impulsivity

I'm a sucker for non-current closeouts. For an even 2K I scored this Specialized Tarmac Expert. It's got Fulcrum wheels and full Ultegra with the exception of a Dura Ace rear derailleur.

I'm a major Fred and immediately set out to Fred this thing up. I put a Specialized Body Geometry comfort saddle (my butt loves these), some super heavy duty puncture resistant Specialized Armadillo tires and some Crank Brothers Acid pedals (pilfered from my MTB) on it. It weighed 16.4 without pedals on the LBS scale before my additions. As pictured, I porked it up to 19.1. I'll order in some different pedals eventually. Now I need to get a frame mount pump and an under seat suitcase and I'll be set.

I may eventually do that. It's got a sleeve/shim thingy built into it that allows for some adjustment. I have it as high as it will go. I could flip the stem and adjust it all the way down and that might work out OK.

Good deal. I got the '05 tarmac comp (same frame as the expert, just with a compact) for $750 with 150 miles on it. Not a single scratch on it. Pictured it weighs in at 19 flat (using the bathroom scale method with cages and computer). I have a crappy saddle on it from my beater bike and forte pedals for the time being. Once PBK has the look sprint's in stock and I upgrade to a specialized toupe, I'm expecting it to weight 18.5 at least. I still have the stock ALX 330's on it, so once I upgrade those I'm expecting to drop a pound and a half (which will put the bike at 17 pounds). It currently has all ultegra 9 sped with the exception of 105 brakes and front der.. I plan on upgrading the gruppo to campy chorus 11 speed or record 10 speed next year. Once I do that, I should have the bike at 16 pounds. Maybe new handlebars and seatpost will bring it to 15.5 pound.

Where are the mirrors on the bike?

You are turning a 19 pound bike into a sub 16 pound bike. I turned a 16 pound bike into a 19 pound bike. One of us is doing it all wrong.

I picked up an '09 Tarmac Expert a few weeks ago and love it. Perfect for my needs and looks great. I get lots of compliments.

That photo was taken at the GF's house on the Mississippi coast. I complain about how flat it is around here, but we can ride comfortably year round.
