Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

need cycling shorts for my anatomy issue

I'm looking for cycling-shorts advice with respect to my particular anatomical issue. I'm male, 65, 5'10". 200 lbs. A year ago I had radical prostate surgery. It was a total success, but it left my "private parts" a little bit abnormal and sensitive. With doctors' permission, I started road-riding again 5 months ago. My cycling shorts (run-of-the-mill Cannondale "Classic") don't make any accomodation for my parts. I've tried a lot of things, and what's worked best is a jock strap WITH protective cup under the shorts. I know, I know, no underwear under cycling shorts, but the cup creates some space and eliminates rubbing. Being now unemployed, I ride pretty much every day for at least an hour. I can go comfortably for up to 3 or 4 hours (i.e., the limit of my stamina) with this rig, but it’s still not perfect. Anyone have any ideas? Is this a unique problem? Are there any shorts (bib or no-bib) which have a "pouch" instead of just a flat chamois in front?

There are a number of saddles manufactured with an extra large relief area in the center. You might look into one of these.

You won't find cycling shorts with a pouch, as the shorts are supposed to keep things in place.

I just got some new Voler shorts. They have a contoured pad and I found them to be very comfortable. I realize it isn't quite what you are looking for, but something like those or the Specialized Body Geometry bibs might be worth a look.

Thanks to all for your advice to my posting, "Need cycling shorts for my anatomy issue" 11-15-08.

Thanks for saddle suggestion. I got one and tried it. It helped, for sure, but wasn't enough.

to bdcheung
You're correct about "no pouch." I personally think it would be a good feature for everyone, but the manufacturers would need market pressure, and apparently that ain't gonna happen.

You wrote, "I just got some new Voler shorts. They have a contoured pad and I found them to be very comfortable." At this point, I can say EXACTLY the same thing. Another BikeForums guy with the very same problem as mine sent me a private message also suggesting Volers. I bought Voler Elite DX bib-shorts from Velowear. Did 97 miles total over 4 days with no discomfort. Problem solved!

Thanks also to BikeForums.net for making this all possible.

Id take a look at the SMP saddles. They have a HUGE cutout. For shorts.. I cant really give you any suggestions as they all seem to be about the same to me.

Another option might be this.. a friend of mine was having prostate issues and switched to this saddle and hasnt looked back.

You might get in touch with "jonesware" they will do custom work on shorts, i'd bet if you explained to them the problem etc and what you think might work they could come up with something, worth a phone call.

Yes, and he was no help at all. Said he'd never heard of a problem and wasn't familiar with cycling, but would look into it and get back to me.
