Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is $2 for 2 Screws a Fair Price?

OK, so after my Saturday ride I noticed I was missing 2 screws from the bottom of my cleats. Apparently most lbs's don't carry the screw that my Carnacs use as it is a bit longer than the standard screw.

The one LBS that I had gotten a screw for my cleats from before (for free) happened to be closed when I went by so I went to one a bit further. One that, incidentally, I had spent about $120 on some jerseys and stuff just a couple of weeks ago.

So I go in and the guy takes my cleats, goes and gets the two missing screws and installs them in my cleats. Then proceeds to say "let me go check and see what these cost". I kind of expecting them to be free, but when he came back and asked me to pay $2 I thought it a bit much, but paid it nonetheless. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Afterward I went to Home Depot and found the same screws at 3 for $.66. What do you guys think. Fair price or not?

I'd pay twice that to not have to go to Home Depot for a couple screws.

this question can be taken in several ways.

the way in which the question is taken is paramount in determining the answer.

The LBS is not a charity that gives out free stuff.

I bet the screws the LBS sold you are a harder and better material than the ones you saw at home depot.

Are you used to people just doing/giving you stuff for free all day long?

Yeah, sure. Their steel is no doubt of a higher grade. You forgot to mention that it is probably way lighter too.

Um, I wouldn't call turning a screw driver a few times "fitting".

$2 is such a small amount, you should not have even given it a second thought, much less make a thread about it.

Considering what the price of a stamp is for a 1oz letter, it is a bargain. Just the times we live in.

You're right, of course. Then again the $.20 that those screws cost him is so small that maybe giving them away as a token of generosity might have come back to him many fold in additional business. Just saying...

You paid it, right? Then fair price.

Next time you know to go to the hardware store (stay away from Home Depot if all you need are screws).

FWIW, if they are stainless, which they probably are, then $2 is about right. Stainless hardware, in small quantity, are a bit more expensive. Plus, it's a metric stainless which will be harder to find in a normal hardware store.

Um no. Standard zinc covered steel screws which were plentiful at both Lowes and HD, even in metric sizes. Go figure.

Breakdown

Free - You lucky _____
2 Bucks - Fair price for the merchandise
That is a bargain- In some places you would have to buy the whole cow (or a new set of cleats)

When I needed some SPD bolts last, I went to a bike shop in NYC. (Because that's where I was). They gave me 4 bolts for free. I put $5 in their tip jar.

YMMV.

it's a bike shop. of course they're going to sell the screws for more than home depot does. how many carnac-specific (longer) cleat screws do you think they order in a year, compared to the amount home depot does? i really doubt the bike shop was making a huge margin on this transaction, and even if they were that margin still amounts to less than two dollars.

think of it this way: you had a problem. two dollars and five minutes later, your problem is gone. the amount of time and money you spent is so small that it has already been outpaced by the amount of time you've spent questioning it online.

$0.33 for each screw and $1.34 for installation. Not bad. At least they didn't charge a .25 hour minimum.

He also installed them in your cleats. My LBS has a $5 minimum labor charge* so you got off cheap.

*For something like that, though, they wouldn't charge the labor for a regular customer. I bought a new rear wheel and they transferred the cogs from my old wheel for free.
