Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Miyata Transformation - lots of pics

Just went for a 25 mile maiden voyage on my modern Miyata 914. I just love it! Much smoother than before and the lighter wheel really makes a difference. I'm sure some of it may just be in my head, but I think it feels smoother, accelerates faster, and feels more efficient when powering uphill. And of course, more gears always helps.

This is how it looked like when I first got it in March 2008, a 1991 914SE NOS off Ebay:

I admit, I absolutely love the look of downtube shifters. I just don't like using them. And the original gearing was 53/42 front, with 13/23 back...I'm really not that fit.

So, transformation #1 - Sora 7 speed STI with 13/28 cassette:

Still wasn't happy about the gearing. So, further changes made...
  • Ultegra SL shifters
  • Ultegra 6600 FD and RD
  • Ultegra 6650 Compact Crank
  • SRAM 1070 Cassette (11-28)
  • Ultegra 6600 Hub/Mavic Open Pro Black, 32 spoke 3x cross front & back

May have chosen wrong bar tape - was trying to be creative. Should have stuck with black I think, as investing in a white saddle is too expensive. Also, bought the Hutchison Ultra 2 tires off Chainlove and they only had that silver color - doesn't really match.

I think I'll swap the tires from my Look onto the Miyata - should be a significant improvement.

I liked it more in original pic. Should keep it like that with new wheels and saddle. Yeah modernizing it would be good but you already have a modern road bike so the down tube shifters would have been fine.

The stem kinda ruins it but the rest of the bike is beautiful. Did you get the wheels from bicycle wheel warehouse?

Yeah, the wheels are from bicycle wheel warehouse. I know the stem is kinda high, but I'm really not that flexible. So...comfort over looks I guess.

I similarly upgrade an 84 trek to STI.

It's a great bike to ride and is comfortable as heck. It's blast to race on too! Though I wish I had my fit set up on it. That would have really helped the last time I rode heh.

That's pretty nice. Just out of curiosity, how much does it weigh?

About 22 lbs. Feels heavy compared to my Look, but it's a very comfortable ride.
