Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding in the fog

Went out this morning to start our ride. Got on the road and the fog had visibility down to about 500 feet.
Decided we should wait an hour to see how it looks. 1.5 hours later, now can see 800-900 feet.
Going to wait a bit longer because we are going to be headed towards the coast.

So how much visibility would you want in the fog before you ride? Keep in mind I have my 14 year old daughter with me. Although she is a very good rider (5 years).

5 years old? I wouldn't ride in the fog. Not at all. I don't trust drivers.

NO, she's not five. She's 14 and has been racing for five years.

i love riding in the fog its quite and peaceful and its like no one else is out there, like riding at night.

i'm a total commuter fred about it. i'll have two blinkies in the back(mars 3.0 and superflash, one on helmet) and two lights upfront. a p7 on soild, and a q5 blinking away. not to mention the reflective vest or jacket with 2inch reflective strips. i'm probably more visable in fog than daylight.

I've ridden through some pretty thick fog but most of those rides have been in the early morning hours when there isn't much traffic. If you're riding in an area that doesn't have much traffic it might be a bit safer, just make sure you have lights because if the fog is really thick drivers will have a hard time seeing you. I would not recommend going on a foggy ride with child in tow.

I would not trust the drivers are paying close enough attention...

We do not get much fog but if the ceiling is low you ride into the clouds...

Descending with poor visiblity is the worst...

It would be fun on a nice MUP you are familiar with. Streets.... not so much.

This past summer when I was still in Nova Scotia I commuted long distance (from the country to the city) into work almost every day and every single morning was dense with fog. I used a dinotte rear light and never had a problem.

There's really no good reason to take the chance, especially w/ the child in tow, in my mind. I can't imagine sitting at my kids bedside in ICU, thinking "but I bought the right stuff to protect her." No apologies here for the lecture approach.

We're both in Orange County. In Huntington Beach there's fog for sure. I go outside on the ride morning and look for fog, wind conditions, temps. If its really heavy fog, I know its my day to go for a morning run.

I hate fog worse than dark.. For starters I don't like the physical affect of that clammy feeling. More important,, You are seen more readily in dark conditons over foggy conditions.. The best remedy is blinkie lights... I have a reflective vest with a blinkie inserted... Often motorists can't see other cars until they are on their bumper. Does not bode well for cyclists..

A night indoors vs. a lifetime of "If only I'd..."?

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Hi,

Was looking forward to riding with my club today, but no-go with the fog in LB. Will wait for it to clear and ride by myself.

Coastal Calif might have decent winter weather, but coastal fog is common in the winter months.. I just don't understand why some clubs in inflexible and we just can't plan on going out in the early afternoon, over miss a club ride..

I've been riding in a fog since 1992. What's your point?

Maybe the Chinese government. I live in NY. They don't have tanks. But I think the taxes are considerably higher.
