Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Honolulu

I may be in Honolulu for work for 10-14 days around Christmas time, and may have some time to ride. If I bring my road bike are there good routes out of the city?

But do you need someone to carry your bags...

It is getting awfully cold up here...

Not on Oahu, well there are a few decent ones at Schofield Barracks. I do not know how easy it is to get on base if you do not know anybody there.

Lots of places to ride in Honolulu, motorists aren't very friendly though.

your better off not riding in Honolulu traffic is bad, once out of Honolulu you shouldn't have to many problems.

I have a home on the big island (6 years) and i still have not worked up enough courage to ride, most people who live on island use most traffic laws as a suggestion, along with the narrow shoulder not a good combination

If you're staying anywhere near Waikiki, ride east out to Hawaii Kai and back. On the return trip, I like to ride up into the valleys and climb the ridges. If you want to go further, you can extend your ride out to Waimanalo or even to Kailua/Kaneohe.

Another one of my favorite rides is Tantalus. It's a fun 9 mile loop with about 1,900 ft. elevation gain. A nice ride with lots of foliage and only a few cars. They recently paved much of the road there so it's a smooth ride down.

If you're riding in town, stick to King St. or Young St.. Beretainia St., Kapiolani Blvd. and Ala Moana Blvd. are all extremely narrow and congested - I almost never ride on any of those roads.

It seems that motorist's attitudes here have improved in recent years. Maybe it's because there's been a significant increase in cyclists on the road. In town, there are plenty of fixed gear riders as well as roadies and utility cyclists.

Enjoy your stay here.

Well, I was going to offer a suggestion or two, but this one has it nailed. [/thread]

+1

I commute around town a lot, and traffic is pretty bad. For pleasure, my good friend and I usually ride out East to Hawaii Kai or further. The road runs along the ocean, and the view is awesome.

Hawaii sure feels nicer than Chicago right now. There are two SS agents who are here on the Obama detail, brothers, and both are triathletes. They're dying to ride here. Anyone know where they can rent or acquire a couple road bikes to get some rides in? One is about 6'1'', I haven't met the other, so I am thinkking 57-60 cm frames, if anyone has a spare road bike, they would be willing to pay for the use.

The route's mentioned are great. One other ride that would be nice,
would be to start in Mililani Town. Head north on Kamehameha highway through
Wahiawa.Pass the Dole Pineapple visitor's center, then down to Haliewa. A nice
surf town to pit stop. Further on will bring you to the mecca of surfing.
Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and the infamous Pipeline. The surf should be big,
something to see. Save any water adventure's for Waikiki, much safer.

Sorry, other than Waikiki, I meant the East side of the island is where I'll be spending a fair amount of time, around Kailua. I've been told by a local triathlete the shore route from Diamondhead is good, and she mentioned a loop with some climbing near the Army barracks.

I use the Sci-Con Aero Soft case. Its awesome. If you search this forum, you'll find a lot of posts of mine about the details of it.

Kailua is the wettest (rain) part of Oahu. Winter is the wettest season of the year in Hawaii. Also, Kailua can be quite a bit colder than Waikiki, so make sure you check the correct weather forecast.

Had a couple awesome rides so far....thanks for the advice. I rode from Waikiki out the Eastern shore to Waimanalo and back, which was 40 mile round trip. The part past Hanauma Bay was spectacular.

On Christmas Eve I rode from Kunia, down Kunia Road, past Schofield Barracks, and down Kam Hwy., turning around just a couple miles short of the coast, somewhere along the Dole Plantation. I would have gone further but the light was disappearing. I was on the bike at 4 PM and the light turned incredible. I lost a lot of time stopping and shooting pics. This ride was about 30 miles round trip. THe last 20-30 minutes I was riding in the dark with the lights of Honolulu off to my left. I felt like I had the whole Island to myself, and it was a long descent back to Kunia so I was flying. Nice way to end the ride. This was one of the most magical rides of my life, due to the sunlight and rain shower, the rainbow, the changing light, and the incredible scenery.

I have some kind of strep or bronchitis or some other infection, so I feel like shiat but feel better while on the bike.

I hope to do some more rides, like Tantalus and others, sick or not. I will post some pics in just a bit.

Here's the links to the rides from my Garmin 705...

Thank you, took that same ride a year ago, brings back the memories. Those death cookies on the rollers on Kunia scared me shiiteless when wet.

Thanks for the pics as well, great memories.

And FYI, the freaking traffic sucks there, but I'm used to the open roads of CO and nice wide shoulders

Beautiful pic's. It's great to document special moment's.

If you find yourself in Waikiki at night, stop in at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Head up to the Hanohano restaurant/lounge at sunset or later. The view's
are very nice.
