Is 25% off at an LBS worth excitement?

I have an opportunity to get 25% of the LBS. 15% on >09 bikes.

Should I break the piggy bank? Problem is...I can't think of anything I need (though I have a list of things I want ).

I just get the feeling, even with the discount, I'd be paying what I could find on the internet on any given day.

i am willing to 'buy ahead of my need' in order to save some cash in the long run.

If prices are comparable between online and what I can get at my LBS, I'll always go to the LBS. Do I think you should "break the bank" on a biking hobby? No. But if you have a planned purchase and want to advance it a bit because of the discount, then go for it.

Yes...and they are amazing. I've come back from the future to tell you all about them. Lol. I debated which way that should go....no. 2008 and below.

The thing that gets me about online shopping is shipping...you may get 20% off...but then shipping costs about 20+$...so even if you do get a 'good deal'....shipping negates it.

I went to buy a 20$ shirt off steepandcheap, which down from 60$...with shipping it would come to 40$, so I thought "hmmm. I know, i'll buy two to make it worth the shipping"....then said "waaaait a minute!"

I just had to tease you for it. 4th grade math: > = greater than, < = less than, or as I was taught, the alligator is trying to eat the larger part.

Anyway, compare prices whether there is a sale or not. Performance has "sales" all the time, but the funny thing is the "sale" prices are often the same as their normal prices. In this country, you have to rad the fine print, watch details carefully, and know your stuff or you will be fooled.

Yeah. I REALLY do want to support this particular LBS. I just can't help but feel there is an unnecessary middleman.

I went in yesterday to get a sweat net to use with my trainer. They were out of stock / didn't have any...but said, "Hey, you know what. we can get one for you. Opened up the browser and searched the net"

I'm sorry. I'll get it myself thanks...the one thing I use LBSs for is fitment items (and I usually buy them there unless they are hosing me).

I'm pretty much the same way. If they have it in stock, I'll happily buy it from them, even for a little more than internet prices. If it's not in stock, then why would I want to pay more to wait longer while it is ordered and delivered to the shop for me to make a second trip to pick up?

Or you could buy from PBK with FREE shipping. That is, if what you need is in stock, of course.

    25% is very good for a non-employee.

Some things are easier to find online than others. Ex you can normally find tires for around 35-50% off w/ free shipping.
Some items (for me a 9speed chain) are harder to find online for substantially cheaper than the LBS. So either buy something you will eventually need (easy to justify) or get a big ticket item like wheels and get a respectable discount.

I'm still amazed that after decades, the whole "X% off" thing still works in retail. Usually, it's X% off something that has a price X% higher.

It's a pretty bid deal for the shop... most discounts for clubs etc are more like 10%.

Many (all) distributors have online ordering systems. Are you sure that's not what he was doing?

Tires, tubes, cablesets, chain, cassette, bottles, bars, and shorts. Yep, that about covers what I'd be buying in the next 4 months anyhow.

Online stores are just as much of a "middleman" as a LBS. What, do you think that online stores make the products you see? No.

Also, I work at a bike shop. Time and time again, some punk comes in having us install some part that they ordered online, and it turns out that they paid more that we well the same part for, and they have last years version, and there is no warranty, and the part isn't compatible with their bike, etc, etc, etc.
