Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some of the cars here. Amazing how many cars in the caravan. Some of them were going way fast when they went by. It was quite chaotic for a few minutes, sirens, screaming, horns honking and lots of cowbells.

You might be able to see the peloton in there. And maybe not.

A couple friends were struggling a little on the way home. They haven't been in the hills for a while. They won't forget today after getting dropped by a fat guy.

I'll sort through some other pics later. I had a great time today. My LBS guy went up there last night and set up a shelter and tables and chairs. He fired up the BBQ today and made sandwiches for us with salads, drinks, and cookies. Very cool deal.

It's just one of the small hills on the way back. The long climbs are on the way up, at least 5000 feet in 30 miles. The bridge in the background of that pic was used for bungee-jumping a few years ago until the sheriff stopped them.

That's a small hill? Oh, man do I need to get out of flat MI and find some real hills.

The longest continuous climb is about 7 miles up to the summit. I think this is the section where some of the racers, including Mancebo, crashed on the descent.
The first climb is about 9 miles, but it is broken up by a couple short descents.

Hey BDG, how the heck are you?

That scene looks pretty harsh. Aren't you in Ct or RI or somewhere near the shore? Where did those icicles come from?

More just cold and crappy. We have really only had 2 big dumps but it took forever for the snow to melt. I am about 5 minutes from Lake Erie so I get the Canadian winds almost uninterrupted all winter. 20-30mph wind with mid 20 degree temps really suck but it has been the norm since January.

We've all missed ya Karen, - glad you're feeling better now and hope that hubby had a vision while we was under during the surgery and came out of it convinced that you needed a brand new bike!

Cheri is doing great. We're hoping to make the Lancaster ride again this year...keeping our fingers crossed on the darned economy. I know everyone would love to see you there.

You let me know...Cheri and I just might come up your way first and you can catch a ride with us to Lancaster. That way I can stop at this really great restaurant I've heard about.

Ah, NH, that explains it . . . I knew it was somewhere northeast of me.

I hope you & hubby are doing much better. Hope to "see you" around more often. This here is the hangout thread, which could always use more input to keep it off of page 10.

I'm not a hill person either. I'll tackle whatever comes my way on a nice ride, but I won't go out of my way looking for a challenge. A normal half-mile hill is challenge enough for me. If I'm breathing hard, heart's-a-pumping, that's good enough for me.

I actually got her out for a ride after work a couple weeks ago when it was near 50. Mid 40s is about as cold as she'll ride.
