My "Intrepid" is back: SRAM Red to Campy Super Record 11sp! (lots of pics)

After a week long anticipation, my beloved "Intrepid" PF RS2 is back from my LBS with a complete makeover. After a brief affair with a Specialized Tarmac S-Works SL2 with DA 7900 during a window shopping session (you can read it here), my now Campy Super Record 11sp equipped beauty is back into my life and she isn't happy with me. With her SRAM Red group stripped away and the new Campy's flagship gruppo now mounted, she is determined to teach me a lesson or two.

Here are the before and after pics. Sorry for the lower quality "after" pics. It got dark outside by the time I came home so I had to shoot the camera from within my messy garage:

SHIFTERS
Before

After

CRANKSET and FRONT DERAILLEUR
Before

After

REAR DERAILLEUR and CASSETTE
Before

After

BRAKE CALIPERS
Before

After

I took her on a test ride at the LBS and OH MY, OH MY! Talk about SMOOOOOTH! Tarmac what? DA 7900 what ... well ... not really. The DA 7900 is still very nice from what I remembered and I like it a hell of a lot better than the SRAM Red I had ... that is for sure. But comparing the initial quality and ride to my new Campy Super Record 11sp ... there is no comparison! I am in absolute heaven with my new Campy, but I just might drop a new DA 7900 gruppo on my "Intense" bike and replace the DA 7800 that is on it currently. We'll see ...

COMPLETE BIKE

By the way, the new "Intrepid" weighs only 15.5 lbs (with pedals) with the Super Record 11sp. It is only a hair heavier than the SRAM Red counterpart ... but shifting is so much quieter and smoother!

I noticed it too and did mention it to the owner. I guess one of his other mechanics did the final wrapping and offered to fix it at no charge, but will have to wait until tomorrow because they were about to close up the shop when I got there to pick up my Intrepid. I wanted to ride it tomorrow so I told him it is okay. It doesn't bother me now but if it does, I can always take it back to them and have them re-wrap it.

It's bar tape. Do it yourself.
You got to be kidding me.

I felt the opposite about SR and did not think the premium was worth the change but to each their own. Nice rig.

EDIT:

Super record vs SRAM

pros:
Bling
1 Extra gear to drop people with.

Cons:
Expensive
Heavier
Uglier (subjective)
Chain Tool
1 Extra gear & still getting dropped
No Excuses

Cool, The Campagnolo Super Record gruppo looks much nicer than those off brand parts you had on there before. I like those red wheels too. Those are bling-tastic

I just realize how that sounded, and I don't think the PF or BD frames are pigs, I ride the very same Bottecchia that the OP has, but you all know what I meant.

Tell me about the rear wheel. Did you buy a new rear wheel or just swap out the freehub bodies?

When you are riding behind me, I wouldn't know or care what parts you have your bike
Seriously, it looks pretty nice both ways. Whatever makes you happy! High end Campy has an excellent finish to them ever since the SR grouppo.
Is this LBS of yours SC or Jxs?

Hard to beat either gruppo but your new Record looks awesome.
Question...which hoods are the most comfortable for you...your previous Sram Red or new Campy Record? The shape of the hoods is much different and wondered which you preferred?
Nice bike...

I hope you didn't pay a price in the $3000-$3500 range for that SR group, when it can be had for about $1900 in Europe.

Bought smartly, the new Campy 11 groups can be bargains compared to the competition. Campy Record shouldn't cost more than SRAM Red, perhaps significantly less. Think $1500-1600 for an 8-piece group.

I just picked up Chorus 11 speed brake/shift levers for $205, on sale and Chorus 11 chains for $35. The only difference between Chorus and SR is one Ti part, some cutouts in the brake lever and the lettering on the brake lever. Cuts the weight by about 15 grams per pair. Even the Centaur shifters are the same, except for the 10 speed indexing disc and front rachet. All models below SR will weigh the same.

Super Record is such a waste of money.

Lots of haterade in this thread.

OP, congrats on your purchase and enjoy it, the bike looks beautiful. Thanks for your input on Red vs. SR.

Everyone else, calling one high end group a waste of money and not every high end group a waste of money is complete hypocrisy. Did you really need 10 speeds instead of 9 or 8? Did you really need outboard bearings on your crank? Did you really need a hollow pin chain or wheels with a low spoke count? Of course not, so why are those things on your bikes not wastes of money when SR is?

So many ******bags in this forum.

Bike looks awesome. Either group has plenty of performance, but I personally prefer Campagnolo as well. I will be getting a taste of the Super record "feel" pretty soon myself.

Judging from the comments of a lot of people here, it is obvious jealousy is alive and well. Such a sad trait really.

I thought it was a Ferrari at first, and then I realized it was an "intrepid" so it must be a Dodge.

Dude, VERY nice setup! While I probably wouldn't have swapped my Red group for SR 11 (I'd want both, so I'd have swapped out my DA 7800), I can't say I'm not jealous. Sick! Just sick. My Wilier is eventually going to get the 11 treatment but it will be a mix (Ch, R, SR).

Not really. The internals on the Campy Super Record, Record, and Chorus are nearly identical.

Differences in shifters only are:
SR uses bearings instead of bushings in Chorus
SR has carbon fiber insert on the shift paddle
SR has holes on the top of the lever
SR has a titanium internal disk mechanism, Record uses alloy

All models have the same ergobody with ball bearings on the main index shaft. The SR has one titanium part (instead of steel) and cutouts in the brake lever. Of course Centaur has a 10 speed indexing disc and front rachet, but other than that, they are all the same, except for the lettering on the brake lever.

The SR model will only weigh 10-15 grams less per pair than the lower models.
