Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

MTN Bike On Trainer?

Does anyone put a slick tire on the back of their mtn bike and use it on the trainer? I would feel a lot more comfortable having my crappy mtn bike on there instead of my pretty carbon road bike. Plus I could have a more permanent set-up.

Any reason this might be a bad idea?

I do it. They even make trainer tires for MTB rims.

Lots of people do it. If you end up using your knobbies though, expect a deafening amount of noise.

They also make rim drive trainers with resistance wheels that contact the rim instead of the tire. I used to use one years ago during the winter with my mountain bike.

Like so: https://www.minoura.co.jp/erda850-e.htm and https://www.minoura.co.jp/epm-e.htm

Would work just fine. My only complaint would be some trainers will not offer enough resistance with a 44-12 and i like the positioning of my road bike a lot better on the trainer than my mountain bike. If those things do not bother you i would defintally go for it, just throw a slick tire on there and you are set. Like was mentioned earlier, conti makes a trainer specific tire for mountain bikes as well which is really nice.

If you leave a knobby on it will sound like a Harley.

Put a cheap slick on and you will be fine. It is true that if your trainer can't crank up the resistance, you may not be able to stand and hammer.
