Used 2007 Look 585 or new 2009 Ridley Excalibur?
Building a new road bike using Campy Centaur/Chorus and custom built wheels (Velocity Fusion Rims, White Industries H2 hubs). Still trying to decide on a frame.
The Look, of course, is a proven pro race quality frame. I've heard lots of good things about the Ridley too but haven't found any reviews on the new 2009 model yet (it looks different mostly in the seat stay area from what I can see).
I weigh 160 and usually ride 1 - 3 hour rides at 20- 22 mph mostly flat but also some decent hills. No racing yet other than a few time trials. Appreciate any insight.

From the ad,
"Look 585 bicycle frame, fork and head set. white with black graphics. purchased in 2007. size medium. Ridden only on sundays about 35 miles each time. Never raced or crashed. Excellent condition. very comfortable riding frame.I am selling my 585 because I am getting close to 60 years old and I need a little less reach. I liked this frame so much I bought a 585 Optimum, this has a shorter top tube..."

I'd want to see it but typically, "old dudes" take good care of their stuff. LOOKs are very nice and if it was in good condition, I wouldn't hesitate if the price was right.

The price is def right on the Look at $1200 so if it's as described, I'm leaning towards the Look. However the new Ridleys look pretty sweet: https://www.ridley-bikes.com/bikes.ph...gory=1&bike=25 This is a tough call to make without being able to do a ride comparison.

Love my Excalibur. Yeah, different stays this year, but unless they worked to change the character of the bike significantly then I'd recommend it highly. Chip and seal roads are butter and the bike's quick.

I know nothing of the Ridley. But I had a Look 585, and while is was very comfy, the BB was way to flexy.

If they have your size you can get a 2007 Look 585 from Excel for $1800 or so.

Hmm, seems by your reply that you still aren't buying my avg. speeds.
First, you assumed that by not having race experience a person can't possibly get to the fitness level necessary to average 20 - 22 mph which is not true. Second you assumed that I do "ice skating" and that "ice skating" can't possibly build the required aerobic capacity or FTP, which is also not true. I do inline speed, not ice skating, mostly outdoors and longer distances i.e 10 - 30+ miles at a time. (Yes, of course speed skating and cycling are not the same thing, but they are very compatible sports for cross training and building a strong aerobic engine.)
So now, I'm going to assume that you're not worth my time to reply to anymore.

Thanks everyone for your input.
That's the first time I've heard someone say that about the 585. It was good enough for Thor Hushovd in 2006. Out of curiousity, what bike(s) do you consider stiff enough in the BB and how much do you weigh?

There are alot of em around. But Thor has been on a 595 for years, only rode the 585 when it was their top bike. I just know that I could see the BB moving alot more then my Tarmac does. Im a few lbs heavier then you. Alot of people like the 585. However me and most of my friends that rode em have moved on. Me to a Tarmac, another to the new Jamis, another to a BMC.
