Baby wipes - great way to clean a bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Baby wipes - great way to clean a bike

Another suggestion from the old school campy bike mechanic. Clean your bike with baby wipes. Holy crap - it works, and works well! Crazy how much grime and grease one towell will soak up.

And as long as you're digging into the diaper bag for bicycle tips, don't forget a splash of baby powder, every now and then, directly in your cycling shoes, to keep them smelling fresh.

Baby wipes are also indispensable when you've finished a ride but have a long drive home without a shower. Get out of those shorts ASAP and wipe down thoroughly! It will help prevent saddle sores.

I carry a travel pack of baby wipes in my gear bag.

One more baby product tip for the road:

If your bike is dirty and needs a thorough cleaning, and you're in the middle of a long trip without any supplies, clean it with baby shampoo. It's an effective grease cutter, it won't harm your bike's finish, and you can find it in any grocery or drug store.

Yep. Never leave home without 'em. On brevets, they get used w/ their original intent at every control. Best way to prevent saddle sores.

Wipe. Re-apply chamois cream of choice. Change shorts every 200 km.

Baby wipes are the new best thing ever, like sliced bread once was.
E.g. This wireless powertap is the best thing since baby wipes.

Sliced bread is itchy; especially the kind with seeds on top.

They can be pressed into use as a bicycle horn.

After my baby uses them they are generally pretty gross. I dont think I would want to rub that on my bike after she is done. I dont even want to know why you wipe your face with them... yuck.

Yeah, I have a lot of them around too. I also use them after my commute in if it's cool and I only have a mild amount of sweat to worry about. Hit the face, legs, pits, un-lit areas, and you're done.

One tip: if your baby wipes dry out, just squirt some water from your last ride into the box. All the soap is still in there.

That's just sick and wrong. You people are using baby wipes for a completely unintended purpose.
Pretty soon, people like you will be sticking Q-Tips in your ears!

They come in alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The alcohol ones are great for cleaning the grease and muck inlcuding off the hands; the others with aloe vera and the like, are great for imbibing that wonderful clean smell that we all love... and they do a neat shine-up on the paintwork, too.

Wipes for cars and bikes have been around for a quite while. It's likely the old-time shop dude is using commercial packs.

I've been trying to be more ecology minded. The baby wipes would be good when I'm out on the road and there is no alternative. But most of the time I rely on my 2 gallon bucket from Home Depot, some laundry detergent. That cleans both the bike and my sweaty jersey and shorts.

The dirty detergent water goes into the shrubs, as grey water. And the rinse cycle is fresh water in that same 2 gallon bucket, again grey water in the shrubs. Presto, clean bike, clean jersey and shorts.
Rinse and hang dry.

No. Q-Tips are for cleaning inside each link of your chain.

409 has also worked out for me. Has anyone tried cleaning a bike with (cleaning) alcohol-soaked paper?

I've not tried alcohol-soaked paper, but my normal bike cleaning is usually a bit of 409 sprayed on a paper towel and a bit of water on another.
