Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Full fenders on a Roubiax??

Anyone done this??

I've got an 04 Roubaix (aluminum/carbon frame) that I have mounted clip-on fenders. I'm wondering if full fenders would give me better coverage when riding in crap weather. The feet and drivetrain are getting covered in crap and the person behind me suffers from the dreaded rooster tail.

Buying a different frame isn't in the cards and I don't think the clip-ons can handle the addition of mudflaps. They already bounce around a bit.

You might be able to clip some full fenders onto your frame.

You may have to use P clips on the seat stays, but you should be able to do it. Your ride mates will thank you, especially if you add a flap on the back one, cut it out of an old milk bottle or something.

get some full fenders and a dremel tool and some rack stays.

I usually cut the front fender and then mount 2 rack stays underneath the front brake

for the rear I usually cut around the brake bridge and do the same thing.

It is time consuming, but you only have to do it once.

I have full fenders on my SS commuter. They were a royal pain to install....but once on they are great! Especially on a wet morning like today!

In other words, go for it!

My main concern is if I have clearance under the brakes for the fenders to fit...

The rear stays already have fender mounts, that I have a rack mounted too, but the front fork will need some P-clips...

I know the simple way would be to go buy some and see what happens...

There is a way. It's a total pain, but it's possible. I just mounted full SKS fenders to my winter bike, which I swear was specifically designed to resist fender installation. Mine is similar to this install that River City Bicycles did.

I needed rubber coated p-clamps (makeshift eyelets), river city's "reach around" brackets (no room for a 1 piece fender), and a brake caliper bolt extender (can't mount front fender as the bolt is recessed into the fork).

I have been contemplating this as well but laziness has prevailed. My plan is to more or less hack some fenders into 2 parts and stick them back on in the most elegant way possible. I am waiting for a set of cheap or broken fenders to find me. So far that has not proven to be a good plan...

Well I tried it and there is success!!

It's tight, but it works....Next will be the one road test and then I need to add some to my bike, this is my wife's bike...

Here's the full shot

Here's the rear one

I couldn't use the brake bolt so I had to improvise with a zip tie.

Also, at the bottom I had to affix the fender to the seat post with zip ties...But it works...

The front one

The rear has mounts for the fender stays, but the front doesn't so more zip ties

The front brake bolt worked for the mounting bracket

Next is finding some P-clamps for the front, I assume the hardware store will have some...

Either way I'm happy and I thought I would post up in case anyone else is wondering if it would work on their bike...

Oh yea, the fenders are Planet Bike Cascadia's...

Now to go for a ride...

There's something about a bike with fenders that I absolutely love. Any bike with fenders is a sexy machine. I want some now.

I tend to agree, depending on the bike. What I mean is ... there's something really weird about seeing carbon and fenders together.

It does look weird, but it also says "F*ck it... let's ride."

Those are excellent fenders. The mudflap really do the job. Before those came out, I had to jiffy some plastic to the fender for mudflaps. Did you get it at Burlington's MEC?

Yes I did Mr. Bubbles....The day that store opened was a very happy day! But also a sad day because I knew my Mastercard was going to be getting a workout!

The store is in riding distance so the wife and I have already ridden there a few times and dropped a fair bit of coin on some jackets and other cycling related purchases...

The whole carbon and fender thing is because I've already got 3 bikes and the bank account in saying no more. So I make do and use the oldest bike as the bad weather bike...

All I know is that this is the first time I have ever ridden a bike this late into the year and I'm focused on riding through the winter....As long as the weather cooperates...
