Here is somthing interesting.
I could use a little back up, but then again, there is no way to change these people.
yes I own a plow.

Firmly supporting my experience and belief: The pro's drive a government issue L9000 politely and I never have had an issue riding here year round for years.
The imbeciles are on that forum. The popular taxes argument doesn't withstand a moment's scrutiny.

That forum is the snowplowing world's equivalent of the A&S/SSFG crowd. I know a thing or two about the average member of the "Snowplow/Lawn/Arbor/etc/Site.com" forums. Generally they're small time schmoes without the smarts to ever succeed to the pinnacle of their respective professions. In high school, they were often voted "most likely to 'forget' to pay payroll taxes to the IRS."
I don't expect the average plower to give a rip about the sport of cycling, but I have to laugh at how idiotic some of their responses are. I am not a "militant" or "in your face" cyclist, and will admit that there were a couple of valid points (although I rarely see five-abreast cyclists) but they were more than drowned out by the huge volume of d*****-baggery.

It doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong. Once most people make their minds up, they will keep on defending their cause even if they themselves are convinced that it is no longer right. This is vastly preferable to ever admitting that they could have been wrong in the first place.
It boggles my mind that such a large number of people carry such a dim view of peaceful coexistence and who clearly show that the only rule they truly believe in is "might makes right".
A WWII tank would also be a slow moving vehicle. Would it receive the same response and treatment? Around here, you would be just as likely to be impeded by a 7000 lb. farm tractor as a bicycle. I feel that the core problem is in the basic value system that we have, and I don't see that changing for the better.
Advocacy may have a positive effect, but if we teach people 95% might-is-right and winner-take-all, and only 5% tolerance-of-all, which side wins? I think the evidence is obvious which side is winning.

Plow truck drivers remain the only class of road user (2 occurrences) to honk and scream at me while going in the opposite direction. One of them actually stopped in the middle of the road to scream at me and stopped traffic behind him. No idea what he was saying.

I was about to join that forum to banter with those Northern Rednecks but someone beat me to it. Well done bscjake. These imbeciles are probably the same jack up 4x4 penile compensators that try to run us off the road in the summer.

They're having a moronathon over there, and you guys don't stand a chance.
I particularly like the comment about "cross country skiers on the snowmobile trail." Just like when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail; when you're a sno-mo ho-mo, everything looks like a snowmobile trail. The problem is snowmobiles illegally on the ski trails, not the other way around.
Of course, just like getting killed on a bike--being right doesn't make you any less dead.

Especially a stoned one. On my way in I pass several commercial properties that require extensive plowing. Every time it's some wigged out looking guy with pot smoke wafting out at at least one property. Let's face it, we're dealing with the shallow end of the gene pool, folks.

Let's admit it. Some of those posts were deserved. I've seen "other guys" on bikes conveniently disregarding traffic laws. It's the one-bad-apple effect.
There was a recent local news article about a biker who had video cameras front and back. He was turning video over to local law enforcement when a passing vehicle was too close. There were some scary encounters there.
Then they showed the one of him out in a snowstorm with a municipal plow trying to get past. He may have had to be out there b/c that's the only way he gets around. If not, just being out was not a bright idea and getting in the way (yes, he was IN THE WAY) of the plow was even less bright.

vehicles pay registration taxes because they wear the roads out with their use. I wonder how many cyclists it would take to wear out a road.
we don't pay a fuel tax because we don't use fuel...
this would be a great opportunity to have them ride a mile in our shoes!

Around here, vehicles pay registration fees because the state needs to raise revenue.
Ditto for fuel taxes.
There's no relationship between the two that I can see.
I pay state income and local property taxes for things like law enforcement on the roadways, road maintenance, etc. Just like the plow guys.

We should get smog checks on our bikes. I really wonder what kind of damage exploding carbon fiber has on our environment. I mean they have to pay for their trucks to get smogged, we should as well. And don't forget fuel taxes...because us cyclists are water and energy bar guzzlers.
It still surprises me how stupid some people are. I have nothing against plows or big trucks. But, I do have something against people that try to run me off the road or kill me. I wonder how funny it would be to cut their brake lines and have them run off the edge of a cliff and possibly die. Couldn't be as funny as killing a spandex clad, shaved leg, cyclist.
