Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

British mail order places

I almost exclusively buy stuff from PBK. It is free shipping, arrives extremely fast, and has awesome prices. Availability is not the greatest, but since I tend to buy 2-4 at one time of items that wear, I don't notice it so much. However, they do lack in some things I would like to see. Hence the following question below.

Is there any other comparable mail order/web sites in the UK? Please list them.

I have ordered from Total Cycling and Ribble. Both did great, but they have to be big orders to justify the shipping flat rate charges.

Ribble Cycles is awesome.

I also dealt a lot with www.chainreactioncycles.com

They're good as well.

Heck yeah. Great deals on wheelsets (got a set of dt swiss 1450 rr's for 495 USD, free shipping, no tax, no VAT). What's up w/ the Pound? I'm getting all my best deals from the UK these days.

any other places with free shipping?

seems like when i add up the shipping cost, its not a whole lot cheaper than a lbs for many small items. with pbk i don't mind buying tubes or rim strips and waiting, but when a 8 speed chain isn't avalbie i might as well buy it at a lbs, but i don't have the extra five dollars to spend right now. more free shipping please!

Not sure if totalcycling.com does or not, but I think they do. Check 'em out for good deals on pre-2007 campy parts. Plus, last time I checked (today) they had good deals on 2009 Zonda (~381 USD w/ today's exchange rate) and Eurus wheelsets as well.

IMHO, Chain Reaction Cycles pretty well rocks. Great selection, good prices, nice sales and specials. I can only hope their facilities flood out again soon as I got some sick deals in the last month from their flood sale. One caveat, just make sure that, on orders with multiple items, that everything you order is currently in stock or they will wait to ship everything AFTER all items are in stock to buyers outside Europe.

The best I have dealt with are chain reaction and parker international. Between them they have the best prices, usually in stock, quick shipping, good customer service (always respond).

Don't you have sales taxes and import duty in USA when the stuff is sent to you? I've found cheaper stuff on USA sites but UK customs will always put the import duty and VAT on it when it is delivered. So far adding the taxes means I can't beat UK prices.

At least in BC, we're only hit with the GST, no provincial tax. Even still, if you factor in shipping, most of the stuff ordered from the UK is at least half as cheap as it would be if bought from an LBS. Example: DA cassette: LBS: $300 + tax at 12.5%; UK price: $165 + 7% + $17 shipping.

Even though I'm an American cyclist living in America, all my shopping for bike parts has been from mail order over in the UK regions. They have the usual stuff plus I can obtain, for instance, less common items like TA chainrings and Campy stuff for less. I also appreciate the fact that active cyclists overseas are invariably more educated about the sport and the equipment. The mail order outfits mentioned by others are good. Nashbar, Performance, Colorado Cyclist, Excel, Competitive Cyclist, Jenson, Wrench Science, etc. etc don't get a penny of my money. Disclaimer: born in USA, live in USA, no familial connection to UK area, so no axe to grind. Only exceptions to shopping preference - if the exchange rate goes bad I do look elsewhere for chains/tubes/tires and support my local LBS's, and I did buy a used Merlin from US eBay.

The city tried to turn us into a giant hedge fund. Lots and lots of debt and a huge trade deficit. Our oil reserves in the North Sea are running low. Also, the pound was really high because of concerns about the Euro and Dollar, now alleviated. Prices might go up, since most of the goods sold in UK stores are imported from the Euro zone.

+1

I really like their selection and service in the times I've ordered from them. The deals are really good and often had items that were not available on PBK. Shipping was quick and convenient as well since all of my items arrived sooner than expected.

Here's an interesting news bit - the order I placed yesterday with PBK was shipped with ParcelForce as well, and now they have a tracking number. Also, my last order with Ribble shipped out on Thursday, it was on my doorstep on Monday. Can't beat that.

Wiggle have free shipping over $200AUS, so that, combined with their pricing which is as low as PBK means they are probably going to get my money for an Ultegra compact.

Plus they have these closeout deals where the price drops by 1% every day on certain items. Kinda fun to watch how low they can go.

Try High on Bikes on ebay . They are very good on pricing and postage. I've used them about 4 times with no complaints

I just ordered from Wiggle and was impressed with their communication and how fast they shipped it. Also their prices are great. I have not received the item yet so that's all i can speak of.

I ordered from www.outdoorgb.com and canceled because of how slow they were taking to ship. I read other bad reviews of their site and I will stay away.

How is it that PBK (and maybe other British shops) manage to consistently underprice the stateside prices even while covering shipping?
