Would it be so wrong to build up this frame with 9 speed components?

Would it be so wrong to build up this frame with 9 speed components?

'09 S-Works Roubaix SL2 Frameset ($2600 at LBS)

I have an assortment of brand new 105, Ultegra, Dura Ace components in my garage. It's all 9 speed stuff, though. Would that be so wrong?

I like the idea - I've got a mix of 105, Ult and DA on my 07 Roubaix comp, and this would be the kind of thing I'd think of doing ahead of laying out all the $$$$ on a built up high end frame. Let us know how it goes.

Go ahead and build it with what you got. Just be sure to always pass on the left so that snobs can make fun of your melting pot gruppo as you're dropping them. Do you have SRAM to throw on it also?

Hell yeah. I have 9 and 10 spd DA, and the 9 spd works cleaner.

Agreed. I've got a full set of Ultegra 10 speed ready to go...hoping to put it on a future carbon frame. Did a complete overhaul last week on my existing bike that's equipped with 9-speed and just couldn't find the motivation to swap it out. After new cable and housing, every component cleaned and re-lubed, the bike runs AMAZING. Glad I didn't change and still hoping to build a CF bike with the 10-speed stuff.

It's hard to count the gears on someone else's bike when your riding down the road.

I have thought... baybe I should switch from 9 to 10 speed, but than I think, what would I do with the extra gear but go one speed slower.

If you have the parts than go for it, then if you find a great deal on your perfect group, swap it out... or ride it till it dies.

I think it depends on the cassette range you want.

Common cassettes:

In my experience, i know i really miss having the 16 but not the 18. So, if i want to run 12-25, 12-27, 11-23, 11-25 or 11-27 i want 10 speed so i still have the 16. If i am running 12-21 or 12-23 i do not care whether it is 9 or 10.

Yeah, the 16 can be nice to have, but I honestly shift two gears at a time for most of my shifting. We just have too many gears, IMO. I think some people are too cadence sensitive. Ride around on a single-speed or a fixed-gear for a while to see what I mean.

You're probably right. I have considered trying SS but am at my quota for bikes, due to available garage space. But now i feel like an idiot because it only just occurred to me that i could just choose not to shift...

Just remember in 2009, all 9-speed technology will stop working unless you purchase a heavy converter box.

Never mind, I think that was TV. Hell yes to do it. How many gears do you really need?

So it's not just me. The smoothest shifting bike I've ever ridden was an older Trek with all Ultegra 9spd.

I have full ultegra 9 speed, i see nothing wrong with it. I've test rode various high end new models and didn't see that great of a difference where I just needed to upgrade. although the new SRAM rival looks pretty sweet, I was thinking about doing that for a little bit of weight savings and looky looky bling bling
