Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rubbing it In (Sorry)

Ok, this is a bit mean for those suffering through ungodly weather. But in LA today it is 74 degrees, sunny and clear. Here is a photo from outside my work. Keep on riding!

I guess the punishment on my part is that it is this nice and I can't ride today. (I commute by bike but it is only 1 mile)

Ba$tard! I hate you

I just got back from a ride to my climbing gym and on the way back it started to sleet which turned to a very cold rain.

It really was ridiculously nice in LA today. I'm a transplanted east coaster, and I'm still shocked at how gorgeous it is.

Did a 3hr ride up the Santa Monica mtns into Malibu today - I wish I had a camera - words can't describe how stunningly gorgeous the view of the ocean was in the serene, isolated Malibu mtn peaks. Unfortunately, my heart felt like it was going to burst through the roof as I was getting dropped by a pack of Cat3/4 riders, but I can live with that, as I'm pretty new to cycling still.

IMO, you shouldn't be allowed to live in California unless you do outdoor sports on the weekends. It's otherwise a total waste of the weather. Of course, that would make my bike rides more congested though...

The most unfair part about California, is that good winter skiing is 1hr away, and at Big Bear, 3hrs away, you have outstanding powder-type skiing. When I lived on the East Coast, I skiied at Sunday River and a bunch of other smaller places, and there was ice, ice, and more ice. Big bear is generally powder, powder, powder...totally different. I definitely found West coast skiing far superior to my East coast experiences (although I didn't do the biggest East coast ski resorts, which I'm sure are outstanding.)

I love CA because it's so freakin' nice. I also hate CA because it's so freaking nice and very few people who lives here really appreciates it.

Our air quality sucks. That's why we ride our road bikes into Malibu mtns by beachside - it's probably cleaner than the vast majority of places to ride since it's so high and isolated....

Check back in with us when the winter rains come and Malibu slides down into the ocean. Or maybe later on when the Santa Ana winds kick in and everything catches on fire.

You can text us while sitting in a traffic jam.

Actually, the biggest problem I have with CA isn't the traffic (horrendous, but not much worse than any major city during rush hour), earthquakes (inevitable), or the fires (I don't live in those posh estates in the country.)

Job and housing costs here are through the roof. Even in this recession. $1 million here on the Westside gets you a ... 1brm cottage?! (For real.) And if you try and get a job to pay for your cottage, you'll find that 1) there a 10x more people applying for the job than would be on the East Coast, and thus 2) your employer can jack you on your income. Doctors here make over 2x less than what they make in the MidWest, even though Medicare is supposed to pay almost equal rates across the board. Most other professions here are the same.

I doubt that I'll be able to live here after I finish my educational training because of these reasons.

If you've got the sunshine dollars, CA rocks. If you don't, look elsewhere.

Here in northern California, it's 70 degrees, and the air is cyrstal clear with visibility around 100 miles.

On today's 60 mile ride with my race team, we could see snow-capped peaks all around (some over 50 miles away).

And why are you taking a picture from near your work on a Saturday? Perfectly good riding weather here in the Puget Sound area today, AND no trip to the office.

I'll be leaving snow covered Roch, NY on Tuesday for a week of work in Anaheim. I'm still trying to work out the logistics of a bike rental.

Eh, it was 68 and sunny in NC today as well. Plus I can have a 4000 sq ft house and a condo at the beach with a boat for far less than a tiny bungalow there. I'll stick with here.

I rode today in a snowstorm at 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Besides the extra time necessary to get dressed, It was just as fun as the summer. And in some ways, it was even funner!!!

I must agree with the OP that it was a GORGEOUS day today here in So Cal. Our group rode along PCH away from the winds. We all wore shorts for the first time this year as well as short sleeve jerseys. Oh, the air quality was so good, you could see Mount Fuji from Newport Beach (jk ... just being facecious about Mt Fuji ... but the air quality was really good that we can see Catalina Island clear as day from PCH). Overall, it was awesome riding weather!

Hope this keeps up until Palm Springs next month!

we actually have had really great air the last few weeks. Mainly due to some good rains (yes it actually rains here) and currently we have a mild Santa Ana wind going on that keeps it nice and breathable. During the summer...well that is an entirely different story...
