Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD9...
...or a Pedal Force frame with a groupset from one of the UK retailers and some Open Pro/ Ultegra wheels from bicyclewheelwarehouse.com.

CAAD 9.

And that's a rather precise figure. Is it the stash you've been hiding in your mattress?

Something that costs under $847,27 so you might have money left for accessories that usually cost more than the bike ^^

CAAD9 is not the default answer, FFS! The real answer is to take your cash to various LBS' and see what feels good and what you can haggle.

The CAAD9 is a good/great crit bike, but maybe that's not what the OP is looking for? This is Road Cycling and not Road Racing, after all...

Right, because that's all it was ridden for even in the pro peloton right?

It's a good bike all around. For those that think it's too harsh, check your tire pressure, you might be running 5-10 psi too high.

I agree with your suggestion that the OP should test ride as many different bikes as they can.

I like Cannondale, Giant, and Felt for the mid range stuff. I think they offer good bang for the buck in terms of spec and frame design.

That's not what I'm saying... but you have to admit the bike is designed for racing. Moreover, its aluminum, which does lend itself to more... "zing?"

I do agree that it is a good value, however.

... look at Specialized and Trek, all the frames are made in the same place (that includes the holy CAAD 9, none of which these guys ride). Get an Allez Elite (specialized) and you'll have 400 left over on gear. Or get an '07 Tarmac and you can have a 15 pound full-carbon bike for the same price. But it has a sloping top tube, so it must be way slower...*facepalm*

<--- doesn't understand why you'd pay for a full-aluminum CAAD-9 when you can get a half-carbon Trek or Specialized for under that price. Cannondale just has name recognition on this forum. You'll hear the words "Cannondale" and "Serotta" more than anything else here. Hop into a bike with carbon seatstays and fork, at least. I can't imagine paying $1700 on a bike without some carbon. The geometry is all relative and you can fit any bike to have the exact same geo as a cannondale, and don't let anyone fool you otherwise.

People say CAAD 9 because it's the default answer, and they don't know any better. Test ride them.

C'mon, carbon seatstays and chainstays are a gimmick. I'd prefer a full aluminum or scandium frame anyday over a hybrid material frame with less stiffness and responsiveness. If you're going carbon, go hard or go home.

( ^^^^ heh... maybe my first "Incorrect" post... )

Anyway, at this price range, expect about the same level of components, with Shimano 105 or maybe a 105/Ultegra mix. Wheels will be okay, but might be the best part to upgrade later (depending on the crank, too).

The CAAD9 is a hell of a bike, though.

This one if it fits. It does not get much better than this for all day comfort and a good all-arounder bike.

Most racers I know who ride CAAD9's:

Are Cat 3, or above on road.
Compete at a national level in either road, cross, or xc-mtb.
Ride over 10,000 miles yearly
Have been involved in cycling since Lance had two balls.
Have raced on more frames than you have ridden on.

And still choose a CAAD9.
