Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Currency fluctuations - Total Cycling

A friend and I are ordering from Total Cycing in Ireland. Every time I check the site the prices have changed. Apparentlyly their software is sensitive to small currency fluctuations. I think that I may be able to use these flucuatiosn to my advantage if we wait until Jan. 20 the Obama inauguration. The stock market fluctuates with politiacl events. Any ideas on this strategy?

there is no strategy, and your notion about sudden change on january 20th is a hoot.

Total Cycling is based in Northern Ireland not the Republic. Therefore, you need to look at the dollar to pound rates not the dollar to euro rates. The pound is getting hammered in the last few weeks and has been devalued signifigantly.

FWIW, I've seen the euro to dollar go from 1.60 last june down to 1.25 a couple of monthas ago and now its around 1.34.

These fluctuations are very dificult to predict and I wouldn't bet on Obamas inauguration resulting in the dollar gaining in strength just yet.

It changes every day. The USD-British Pound has been fluctuating within a 4% range for the past couple of months. I'm waiting for an Ultegra Groupset to get back into stock at Chainreactioncycles.com, and the price changes from a low of $480 to around $500. I can pretty much guarantee you that the dollar will weaken significantly as soon as the parts come in.

If you have a reliable crystal ball, you're all set. The exchange rate is not changing all that much from day to day, at the present time and you can't control the exact day that total cycling decides to charge you. I've found Ribble to have better prices for most items. Just be sure to subtract the 15% VAT before comparing. Shiny Bike is good too.

Currency traders have their little connection booths in their apartments, so that they can trade 24 hours a day. "Riding the wave" of trying to take advantage of currency futures is a crap shoot. Until recent years, European currencies tended to go up in value during the summer travel months, so if you planned to go over there, it was usually to your benefit to buy the currency in early spring. I have not seen that pattern in a few years. Reason....probably a lot of things that are beyond my complete understanding.

This is on a par with Armstrong having "discovered" higher cadence as a means to demolish his opponents.
