Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

shopping for 1st road bike - Are K2's good?

Hello - I just joined the forum and am hoping to get some awesome help from all of you!

I rode my Specialized 12 yr old mountain bike (with smaller tires) in a 3day century ride and it was hard. I'm now shopping for an entry level road bike (so I don't go broke) and have looked at Felt, Trek, Giant, GT, etc. Today I found a 2008 K2 T9 Alliance that was $1999.99 and I can get it for $999.00 and they'll let me use the $100 off coupon. I'm going to ride it tomorrow and it sounds like it has good components, from what I've been learning. I couldn't find any reviews on the K2 bikes, except for a forum on commute bikes here. I'd appreciate any info you can offer and thanks! Cyndi

Step 1: Get a fitting before you go shopping for your first road bike.

a lot of companies slash their prices. Its not really worth 2k. Anywayss I have no idea. Never heard of K2 alliance and its all about the frame. I'd get something from cannondale.

good bike for a great price. for an entry level bike you want 105 components with a carbon fiber fork for under 1k. this bike is that and more, it has decent wheels, tires, and somehow has ultegra shifters. this bike is more than worth buying. see if you can get fitted.

$999 is right around the ball park for the components listed. If you gave me $999 and told me to buy a bike today, I think I'd go out and get a CAAD9 or Synapse. Since I rarely ever keep my toys over 2-3 years I'm always thinking about resale value.

thanks for the info - however - someone at the shop sold the bike I was looking at and there are no others, but there is a one with an aluminum frame, carbon rear stays & fork, 105 level women's shifters, 9 speed, 105 derailers, fsa triple crank, alex r500 wheelset for a lot less $ - Also a K9 - I'll ride it when it's not raining and if it fits - I'm thinking a good 1st bike for $500 - any thoughts??
