Worth the $$?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worth the $$?

Will be getting a proper bike fitting done on the Madone 5.2 some time next month and after our preliminary discussion it looks like I will be getting wider handle bars. Which brings me to this dilemma: Is it worth the extra 300% in cost to get carbon considering the alleged benefits?

What alleged benefits? I doubt that you'll find any handlebar manufacturers claiming any benefits from carbon bars other than weight savings, and then only for their most expensive super-light products.

I hear some say that due to the flexibility of carbon vs. aluminum can make the 4 hour ride not seem as harsh due to the vibration absorption characteristics of carbon.

light aluminum bars are just as light that almost all carbon bars...they're a lot cheaper...they're probably more durable than most carbon bars...

so what benefits do carbon bars have? MAYBE some unappreciable amount of vibration dampening? other than that...all they do is look cool

course, looking cool is good enough for me. i'm sold! lol

I voted "yes." Only because there were 16 votes for "no."

I was never even tempted to buy $300 bars. But then I saw a pair of carbon bars (easton, 180 grams) going for $60 on chainlove. You can guess what happened next.

You laughed, shook your head, and went back to surfing internet porn?

Just a side note: All the Tour riders used aluminum bars this past year.

Carbon bars can be a little stiffer than aluminum bars. They can also be a little lighter. Making you ride longer and more comfortable is more or less baseless.

I've only laid hands on one carbon bar (are you supposed to say bars as in plural?). I dont know make/model, but it was one of those pretty expensive all-in-one bar and stem, fitted to a Pinarello Prince. I held those bars (bar tape was only on the drops), and they were the best bars I've ever held. I never rode it, I dont know how much it costs, I just know the felt pretty good to hold.

So if you're gonna buy that particular bar/stem, then yeah. Otherwise no. I'm not saying 'no' out of experience, just out of what I read. Bars are the one area of a bike that takes a fall. That's why no pro teams ride with carbon bars.
