Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ode to the unrelentingly ball busting winter of 2009.

I get up today, it's warmer, 28ºF atop Mt. Doom, forecast high of 40º or so, I go out without a shell, no toe warmers. Big friggin mistake. 20 mins. into the ride I'm down in the Pine Island flat farmland, and my bike computer says it's 21ºF. Then 20ºF. Then 19ºF. Then 18ºF. F me. I'm freezing. At any rate, after about an hour of this it starts warming up into the mid-20's. By hour 3 it was mid-to high 30's and it was fine. But man, this is on a day when it was NICE. Sunny, no wind, mild forecast high, and it was still 20º until after 10AM. That's ridiculous. Mt. Doom is a high ridge around here, and it's often 5º+ colder in the valleys, but still, that was a 10º temp swing today between my house and the lower elevations (and it's only 500' or so lower).

Just got my utility bill. Average temp for the last month last winter was 36ºF. This winter 29ºF. That is empirical confirmation of what my bones have been telling me. It's a ball busting, coldass winter. By the way, it's supposed to be colder tomorrow, then back into the deep freeze for at least a week. At least it's not snowing, so that's EXCELLENT.

7 straight days on the bike through today, serious miles today, tomorrow and Sunday. (40-50+ each day). That's the plan. So the point of this thread is that yes, this is a cold winter, it sucks, and there ain't nothin we can do about it, except ride and whine about the cold on BF of course.

My minimum threshold has just been raised in the last 2 weeks.

If it's below 30, I'm snuggling up with Coach Troy on the "iron maiden".

eff it ..... and me.

I'm hapy to be back in milder climes. the fact that it's rained almost every day since i've been back hasn't been a plus.

What's the average temp in northern Europe these days b? Below freezing at night or not? What is it like 40º*and rainy all the time? That's actually very cold, I find it harder to take when it's 39º and raining than 20º and dry. Can't seem to dress right for very cold damp conditions.

yeah, it's been a rough winter. actually, this is more of what a winter should be... i think we all got used to relatively warm winters the past few years.

today, at mid 40's, felt like summer to me.

The 38deg ride I had today felt great on the Eastern leg but when I started heading west that 20mph head wind felt really really......really cold.

it was colder than it had been in a long time. so cold, the canals froze over.

then again, i missed that. it's been various points above freezing since my return.

2008 was .7C colder than the past 15 years. we might be in an overall warming curve but lately it has been reversing and getting colder. arctic ice is regrowing at the fastest rate ever.

I am wagering we are on the cusp of a 10 year rapid thrust to a new ice age.... any takers ?

Yeah, I'm not sure I can make it out this weekend. There's a 30% chance of rain, and I doubt the sun will come out at all.

Very cold here too, really cramping our riding style. Tomorrow morning's ride might have to start at near 50F. Oh the horror, I hope I have enough warm riding clothes.

You guys putting in the miles in the frigid cold/rain have my never ending respect. Or maybe I think you need some mental health counseling, but definitely one or the other.

On the subject of ball busting: serves you right for going out ill prepared, did you think it was May?

This winter isn't up there with my favorites that's for sure. There's been some tough to enjoy cold weather and while we haven't had much snow the cold temps have kept the roads slippery. The other morning I was on 9W and hit a slippery patch that almost sent me flying onto the road, fortunately there weren't any cars coming.

it's 76 right now in beeoootiful Dallas/Ft. Worthless area.
this morning was rough, it was about 52 when I got up.
Of course the bottom is gonna drop out and tomorrow morning will be
high of 43 with 30mph wind gusts.

Botto, it's really cold when the Ziederzee freezes. Heard Amsterdam sold out of skates
a few weeks ago.
