Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to measure KOPS ?

in my fit with pics thread many said i'm to far from KOPS among other things with my position. question is how to properly measure for KOPS?

where do you place the line on your knee?

where are the crank arms suppose to be ?

etc. the way I'm doing it can't be right...the bob is by my ankle!

Crank arm parallel to the ground...

Plumb bob off the tibial tuberosity (bump just below the knee cap)...

Some measure off the fibular head (bump on outside of leg just below knee joint)...

Foot needs to be dead flat as well. A small change in tilt makes a surprisingly large change to the position.

Dr. Andy Pruitt would stick by his plumb line from the front of the kneecap to align with the front of the crankarms.
His thinking is that the kneecap thickness is about the same distance as the hole in the crankarm to the front of the crank arm.

Just had a “pro fit” Monday at the LBS by a Specialized-certified tech. He said a “modern” way of establishing KOPS was to drop a plumb line from the forward-most portion of the kneecap. The line should fall about 1 cm to the rear of the forward-most portion of a normal platform pedal. This technique eliminates the confusion of exactly where on the knee to establish the plumb line, he said. He added that moving the seat rearward of this line favored more power delivery at the risk of anterior knee problems, while moving the seat forward of this line favored more comfort and reduced knee problems, though developing less power. I’m not advocating his position, merely relaying the story as yet another piece of what is obviously a puzzle.

As I understand it, your foot must be in the position it would be if you were pedalling at normal cadence.

I've noticed in all my fits they've set me up with my knee behind my spindle.
