Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Alloy 9spd Cassette body damage with 10spd Cassettes

Don't buy wheels with 9 speed alloy cassette bodys if you are using 10 speed cassettes, IMHO. These are the ones that require the 1 mm shim to be installed before the cassette.

The shape of the 10 speed cassettes cause notches to wear into the alloy cassette body splines, and sometimes make noise. Ten speed alloy cassette bodys have taller spines that dont get notches, but they cannot use 9 spd cassettes.

Yeah, welcome to the late 90's. All alloy freehub bodies notch regardless of what cassette you use. 8spd, 9spd, or 10spd.

This is the reason Shimano adopted the taller 10spd specific spline. It was to allow alloy bodies to be made (you will notice that all Shimano manufactured freehub bodies were either steel or Ti until they came out with 10spd version of the spline) of aluminum.

When other companies failed to adopt the taller spline - sticking with the 8/9/10 version Shimano decided to go back. Choosing Ti as the material again.
