i have 09 rival on my cross bike and i felt exactly what psimet2001 described as a vibration that i could feel in the pedals. but there is no way it felt bumpy, maybe slight grinding feeling but nothing i'd feel was broken or out of adjustment.

dh...hate to tell you but it's just hard to tell what you're describing without being there to hear it for myself. Those were my guesses based on your descriptions.
I can say that it's easier than poo to know what is normal and what is not if you have been even a mediocre mechanic so make a judgement call about your mechanic's abilities...if he's OK then I'd take him at his word.
If it is gear mesh and you do have a different cassette (Shimano in this case) then throw it on there to see if it changes what's going on. You should notice a difference if that's what the problem is.
If that's not it then you have to investigate the BB.
After that you chase down the other variables like chain and chainrings.

I'll try switching out the cassette and see if that does anything.
Thanks again!

Thanks. Yeah, the mechanic's done some great work in the past so he's likely right about this but the weird thing is he said he has SRAM (force from last year) on his bike and never noticed it and he did notice the "feeling" on my bike. That may not mean anything though...

The grinding feels like you have a heap of sand between the chain and the cassette. I guess it is the mismatch of the short cage rear derailleur, which was designed for only small step cassette. The grinding feel is more pronounced at large cog cassette.
