Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Outdoor Ride of 2009

Today we got our first day above 0C since early december, so I took the bike out for a spin. Feels great to be outside again.

One thing I noticed riding in the snow and slush: my brakes don't work. At least not nearly as well. After riding through wet/snowy patches, I had a few scary instants when my brakes couldn't grip. But I soon realized I had to grab the brakes a lot earlier, to dry the rim.

Afterwards... what a mess. The purple frame was painted grey. And the water bottle was covered in road grit...ew.

But man, it feels great to be back outside. While I enjoyed this little preview of spring, it's going down to highs of -15C next week. Back to the trainer.

Here's mine, January 17th ...

And the photos, taken on my January 18th ride, the next day:

I'm thinking I might be able to get out for a ride again on Tuesday or Thursday as well.

Yes, it was beautiful in the Toronto area today. I got out for the first time as well and it was great. I live close to a secondary road which they maintain down to the pavement so slush and snow was not a big issue for me. I got to wear some of my new riding gear, but left my good bike at home and used my beater. The good bike, with all its winter upgrades, will have to wait for drier conditions.

Heck - I got to ride Jan 1 and a few other times that week, and also took off work 1/2 day a week ago to ride when temps got to 50 F.
