What rims for my 105 hubs?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What rims for my 105 hubs?

I have a 07 Specialized Allez elite that is almost fully 105. My stock rims and hubs are terrible (Jalco GX460). I have a local shop that builds wheels and have some 105 hubs that I would like to use. I have narrowed it down to 3 rims....Mavic CXP-33, Mavic Open Pro, and DT Swiss RR 1.1.
I am not a racer, just a weekend warrior and do some local event rides and group rides. I weigh around 190, not sure if that comes into play or not. What wheels would you suggest?
thanks

Can't go wrong with any of them.

Open pros and CXP-33's are simple and good all around, but I would go open pro out of those two. RR 1.1's in white are the secks...

CXP 33's are excellent. So are Open Pro.

CXP 33's or look at getting some Fulcrum 5's or 7's from one of the UK places like Wiggle.

I recently had some 105 hubs built with open pros and I think they run beautifully.

Assuming your hubs are 32h, any of the three should work fine for you. Go with whichever is better looking and/or cheaper.

cxp33 are very sturdy, but pricey. I'd go with the RR1.1 or CXP33, whichever you can find for cheaper.

Any of those rims will be fine, just choose the ones you like the look of.

I've heard that they are not as stiff as other rims and that they also recommend adding a few more spokes if you're unsure. What's your take?

they're not the stiffest rim out there, but they've never stood out as not being stiff. i weigh 160lbs, so super stiff wasn't of high priority for me. as for spoke count, i want to say i have 28 up front and 32 in the rear, but that may not be right. i'll get you the exact number when i get home tonight.

So at www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com they have Mavic Open pros for 239.00 (1862g)
the DT RR1.1 for 279.00 (1678g)
and the Mavic CXP 33 for 259.00 (1872g)

is it worth a few extra bucks with the RR1.1 and be 200g lighter? Would that be noticeable?

Cool, thanks. I am still deciding which rims to lace to some 28h hubs I have and was considering these ones. At 150 lb, stiffness has not been much of an issue for me either, but I don't want my climbing wheels to become noodley descending wheels on the return trip.

If you are going to look at CXP33, then also look at the Velocity Deep V's and Velocity Fusion's. The Deep V's are clyde proof, I know. Fusion's are just as strong only lighter.

I was right on the spoke count. I can only compare the built IRD wheels to the Shimano RS-10 wheels they replaced, and the IRD's feel better in every way. I think for a climbing wheel they will be just fine. For sprints, one might want to look elsewhere.
