Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New saddle for the commuter bike: 2014 Hot New Full 3K Carbon Fiber Hollow MTB Saddle Very Light 14 5x27cm Glossy | eBay

Its hard to get more minimal padding than that and the shape looks very similar to a Romin. Hoping it feels good. Only $40, so no big deal if I hate it.

(My commute is 11 mi each way, so I'm always wearing cycling shorts/bibs hence no need for a padded saddle).

I hit the motherlode at REI. New Giro Saros helmet and Novara Headwinds jacket from the clearance rack. I have Headwinds pants and failed to purchase a jacket before REI discontinued the Headwinds clothing. I was excited to see this jacket at the anniversary sale! And some PI Thermal Conductive gloves to be riding in comfort this winter. Warm enough for California "winter".

Did REI discontinue the Headwind series? No wonder I haven't been able to find the HW pants anymore. I have two pairs and wanted to buy a couple more because I love them and wear them all the time!

They were on rei-outlet.com for a while. Check the clearance rack. These were a bargain at $48.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the clearance section of the Seattle flagship store just a week or so ago, to no avail. Dang.

Kinesis RaceLight Aithein aluminum frame, size 56, in crazy orange paint. Built it up with SRAM Force shifters and derailleurs, TRP 960 brakes, various 3T and Syntace bits and 28 spoke HED Belgium rims laced to King R45 hubs. Of the 12 or so bikes in my stable, this may just be the best riding bike I have. The Kinesis frame is as stiff and responsive as my Colnago Extreme Power. By using a CF seat post and wider rims with slightly lower tire pressures, the ride is very smooth for aluminum. Once I figure out how to get 25 mm tires on it, currently running 23 mm, it may just be the "perfect" racing machine. Right now, although the frame will accommodate 25 mm tires, the TRP brakes do not. I've got other brakes I could use but those TRPs are the best combination of performance and looks that I have found. Oh yeah, the paint and graphics on the Kinesis are the best looking, IMHO, of any bike I have yet seen.

A pair of foldable 23mm Michelin Pro 4 Endurance slicks from REI. Despite the rumors of supposed difficulty mounting, I put them on hands only first time. It's all about technique, patience (hand strength helps).

I like the aesthetics of the jersey, any comments about the fit (jersey size, your size) and how it is on the bike?

It fits skin tight like it should, long arms covering most of the "bicep" and definitely a true agressive race fit. It tugs in all the wrong places when standing up but on the bike its very perfect. I'm 5'10" 142-145lb super lean build and the small fits perfect unlike most jerseys where I'm between xs and s

I finally got a Briko Twinner helmet. I was a big fan of Super Mario, and got to see him win stage 7 in the TDF back in 1999. The helmet won't likely make me any faster, but it is a piece of kit that I have always wanted. Now I just need a Saeco Cannondale bike to go with it.

How did you get 40% on that jersey? I know about the 20% off survey coupon, but that jersey wasn't on sale, was it?

I imagine that if they had it on sale already you could stack the 20% on top of that. My size is never on sale there....
